Environmentalism and buisness economics // Ambientalismo y economia empresarial

(English version below)

---------------------------------

Appologies for my brutal absence, between my computers' sudden suicide by falling in a precipice. As the saying goes: It's not the fall that kills, but the sudden stop; and that I've been teaching a class to industrials and businesspeople and this is what I wanted to talk, type to you about.

It turned to be quite interesting that everyone, no matter the size, from micros (1 person business) to 600 employees (or more), just a handful had ideas of how to save money and at the same time help the environment.

It so seems that we all have a preinstalled software in our brains the notion that any environmental implementation is cost rather than investment. A consciousness act rather than a money must.

On the other hand, we do have ideas but it always revolve in two maybe three and along the same lines to do: lightbulbs, fix water leaks and use less paper...

Another quite jaw-dropping fact was that, not only one but two multinational corporations found huge savings... even with their in-house 6Sigma blackbelts, environmental and sustainability department experts... dozens of employees dedicating their whole check-in schedule to find such, and hadn't some even truly obvious... One of them, with only $50,000 investment came about to save $1,500,000 per year...

I attribute this to 5 factors:
1-shop blindness
2-overconfidence, or to that defect, fear
3-supervision and bureaucratic systems which unavoidably have redundancies
4-Ill-conceived savings
5- and most IMPORTANTLY: metrics were all wrong

It just so happens that 6Sigma and most financial methods are based on percentages, not on absolute values, giving way to very important savings or rather losses. For what I've seen and experienced, if there is no mental change, then there will never be any change.

Out of my pupils, the one resounding a bit more, not to demerit any of the others is a school that goes through 20,000 liters (about 6,000 gallons) of water per week. We'll see how we got at saving them, my initial projections are about half saved... And no, it's not leaks.
