Innovation is...

Creanme, lo he visto.

----------------------------------------

Innovation is:

A possibilities game... For greater the probability and greater its hidden possibility, the greater its success.

Everyone in the world yearns for certainty, security. Way too many take certainty on the numbers, but I'm afraid to say that most who gamble, the bigger the risk and less numbers, more he wins. And there are so few that gamble big thus little fe that win big. We hear about them all the time.

Lets look at a case: Intel. Apple a bit over 12 years ago went to his trusted provider and asked for him to develop a micro controller for their new gadget that was going to compete against Sony.

Intel arrogantly crunched the numbers, saw that Apple made computers so no indication what so ever that they could compete against Sony... So Intel laughed at Steve Jobs face and denied his request.... Who did not lose, but avoided billionaire earnings? And who's laughing now?
Steve looked for hidden possibilities, again, 'cause it wasn't his first rodeo...
Steve gambled on a tiny probability and hidden possibility. Voila. IPOD. That was the dawn of a whole new generation.

And, Why wasn't Sony able to create that market? Simple. Shyness. Fearful of keeping their Columbia Record label, with a miracle was that they did not lose their own socks.

Every MBA, PhD and other acronyms avoided the risk. Everyone performed their job wonderfully, by the book, down to the letter, protecting their companies interests.... that is, until someone else took away their cakes off their plate.

It is human nature after all to want to hold for dear life to what we have, to our current "reality". But my dear readers. There is NO WAY to avoid others advance and try to take away our cake. It is just matter of time. There is no Acronym in existence that will avoid the others efforts to innovate and gain the cake. That is of course, until again, someone else takes the cake...

"The only constant in the universe is change" - Plato

The game is NOT who gets to keep THE cake. But rather on who has cake all the time...
And sorry to say, there is NO OTHER WAY to have cake all the time but by innovation.

Simple.

And who ever says I'm wrong, could you please tell me then: Which business dynasty has lasted more than 500 years? Empires tumble. They all have weaknesses. All of them, believe me, I´ve seen it.

I believe that the longest a company has stayed in the Fortune list in the #1 position is 15 years about 40 ago... So there is a chance for everybody...

to innovate you need... an open mind // para innovar necesitas... una mente abierta

(English version below)

------------------------------------------

Why is it that I mention arrogance so much?
What is it and what importance does it really have??

Someone suffering from arrogance is the one that will not admit any opinion. That who knows everything and that there's no one better that (s)he. That they are on top of the world and we, the rest of humanity are a bunch of idiots that can't bother him(her) into showing, doing, helping something, anything, much less something that could improve their own status... That is of course, that was the Queen of England, or the sorts showing up to help you... any other is just a vile worthless servant...

"A mind unwilling to being changed, means it is not being used"

Bill Nye says: "Everyone yo'll ever meet knows something you don't"

Evidently and not precisely I write to change an arrogant's mind, in fact I don't believe many arrogants' have read me much... Though I do believe it is still possible.

So goes the saying: "there's no helping that who doesn't truly want to be helped"

Among other things, I am trained in open water rescue. When someone is drowning, the first thing you must do is verify if the person drowning wants to be rescued. Even though it may seem stupid and evident, no, not everyone wants to be rescued. The ones that want to really be rescued will not try to drown you, hit you, push you down among other situations, in which both persons are in get in danger. Sometimes it's just better to take a step back, at least for the rescuer to leave the unwilling drownee to swallow a bit of water or even the whole ocean. It is a bad feeling, but you can't save them all...

I do write for those who feel the need to create and put into practice new things. Truth is, the whole planet needs to create new things, to fix what's wrong and start with what is in our microcorner's reach. The problem lies within the few that feel that need and that within that need, blooms the intent, the will and the way to do.

It is in that quest that the answers arise. Not by waiting for the spirits to enlighten us. that just not happen. Picasso used to say: "Inspiration must find you with your eyes open and working".

Too many are the ones working stubbornly in their daily chores that truth is, they have their eyes closed to any and every chance, mostly to improvement ones. It is frustrating that in too many occasions I arrive with someone that evidently has the need, know the need, and I show the possibilities... and nothing. My proposal may or may not be the one, but now, he'll never know.

"There is none so blind as the ones that will not see"

I guess it ends up being better for the ones willing to listen and ultimately improving. It is totall true that for that you need to relinquish part of your control. The hyper-controller or being a controlfreak is undoubtedly a manifestation of fear... To not be able to relinquish some of it, is arrogance. It is the fear of seeing our own lacks, our own mistakes. And yes, it is terrifying.

Ultimately it is my own humility that erases that frustration which is not mine, and accept that loss which is not mine either.

innovation techniques> draw // tecnicas de innovacion> Dibujemos

(English version below)

-----------------------------------

I was left thinking last time I wrote regarding the reasons I'm not posting more about specific business innovation techniques.

Here goes one. Lets draw an Owl:

Sorry to say that is the truth. There is no magic recipe for however we desire it or too many websites post articles about doing it. As I wrote last post, it all starts within us, within our own mind frame. That would be about the two starting ovals and a few more lines.

Definitely, and No, my intention is far from discouraging you. There will be some that'll say: "HA, an Owl, that's easy!" There will be others that'll say: "But all I can draw is apples!", Ok, that is a good start and with little guidance you'll be alright. But there are, most really, that want to, but are procrastinating for any false reasoning, reasons that ultimately are postponing the inevitable.

Same with innovation processes. Usually you'll need a coach, consultant or whatever you want to call us. Someone that accompanies you through the process, that guides you in what could be, from which pencil to take, soft or hard, how sharp the point or not that much, and even how to take and handle the pencil. Sometimes we think we know. Truth is, maybe but if we don't go at it 100%, it is worth exactly as much as if we didn't know squat.

It is also true that having someone there to support, to guide us is always encouraging. The innovation process is usually a lonely path. In too many occasions (not all), most of our own people, team or whatever will look at us what the What Face. Some will even bother to blockade our path, or worse, sabotage it.

To at least have someone to tell us: "You might be crazy, but whatever happens, don't give up. In fact, draw a few light lines over here, erase that spot, and draw heavy ones over there, and you'll see". Or something of the like... I mean, at least someone outside our own heads is rather nice.

And I'm also guessing you are not really in need of an owl...

People, Ideas and Technology... In that order.

Y entonces, me preguntaran: "¿Porque?"

- Walt Disney

Reflection Sunday:

A reader asked me: "Why is it that you keep talking about peoples characteristics and not enough into implementation techniques?"
Well, in Colonel John Boyd's words: "People, Ideas and Technology... In that order.". So then yo may ask: "Why?"

The answer lies in Einstein: "If you want different results, you need to change your actions", Or around that thought... Anyway,.the point being that, if you want something else, something extra, something new, growth, evolution, you need to change for the better. If your mind doesn't change or keeps at being paranoid, pessimistic, skeptical, arrogant, etc... of course you'll have changes. but you will not like them.

In the words of another wise-man: "Change of our world comes from inside ourselves. " -Buddha

If we desire that our business, our environment, our lives change for the better, we must start out from our own perception of things, that is, from inside our own minds.

"But what do we do with the people that destroy, pollute... Won't listen to me??", I was asked the other day, and with my optimistic mind I said: "Concept is real easy. Execution is close to impossible, but still possible and most definitely worth it. Convince them with actions, not with speeches, blockades, sabotages, protests, etc. That only makes THEM stronger against YOU."

My dear readers, I've written to you about what I did to change my tiny little corner of the world, changes without any precedents and against all odds, predictions (which I proved wrong) and prejudices I faced. Still, I managed to change a few minds and perceptions of many. And I had to start within myself to do that.
If you are not an optimist, that does become impossible. Quite simply because you mind, your ability to see the obstacles and beyond, the hidden roads and all the possibilities, it is YOUR own mind that defeats you even before you begin.

The fact of the matter is that if YOU are incapable of seeing that the businesses around you will NEVER stop and wait for you to evolve, nobody will be able to save you. Substitute products and services come and go.  We tend to think that the panacea product has arrived to solve our next 100 years. It flood the whole world... 15 years later is nothing but a memory...  because truth is we humans tend to focus on the next shiny new object As simple as that, and that will NOT change. Well it is and it will, accelerate, that is.
So, whoever does not want to see that his or her livelihood is in peril IF it doesn't evolve, there's nothing nobody can do to help you. So seeing possibilities is a challenge onto itself, and it starts within our own perception, and continues on with having the right team of right people to make things happen, to modify and change things that need changing, just to grow.

"Whoever that will NOT change his(her) mind, means they are NOT using it" -

"If you have a dream and it doesn't scare you, it is not big enough" - Walt Disney

True optimism vs everyone else // optimistas verdaders vs los demas

(English version below)

--------------------------------------------

I'm posting this on my blog which jut turned 15000 readers! I did not expect that number to be reached this soon. Which gives me Today's topic:

True optimism combined with flexibility is always good, delusion combined with arrogance is a recipe for disaster. These two pairs are always together.
Delusional people believe they will eat any problem for breakfast, they are invincible, everything will go as planned, yatta, yatta...

True optimism is defined as believing everything will be all right whilst knowing fully well that it will never be exactly as planned because you acknowledge problems are always there. Sometimes the outcomes are even better than planned. Which reminds me that poets' song: "you cant always get what you want, you'll get what you need."

" When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is difficult only for the others. It is the same when you are stupid." - Sharktank

Usually pessimists, skeptics and arrogants qualify optimists as delusionals.  Wonder which attitudes truly hurts the business and ultimately our lives:

To know that there will always be problems, but also knowing that with hard work and keeping our head high we'll come about, or... the other...

So What's up with creativity?

(English version below)

----------------------------------------------

A few years ago, an engineer collaborator used to say with pride: "What I love to do is to create, that is because I am very creative".... "OK, great"- I'd answer. Our boss who had his frequent sarcasm attacks insisted: " Ok, create then. I'll wait right here." To of course we all waited for his inventions to arrive. In fact, we waited a few years for any, anything to arrive. Nothing did  ever come from this "Creative" gentleman.

Around the same time, kinda' the accountant, which in any case and I will not dive into any textures here, used to say: "I'm very creative!"... Um, creative and accountant is kind of an oxymoron complete opposite, and if so, very dangerous. Anyway, This girl, same, every challenge we had to solve, she replied: "that is not the way to do it", "Good practices dictate", "no, no no no...." ZERO solution proposals, and worse off when we had to solve things, anything out of the ordinary.... Probably she was creative in presenting objections...anywho... Even with this two fellas, and a few other objectors, I launched 50 products into market in 5 years...

Far too many people I've met like this... I guess is one of those times that: "Yo have to be to know..."

It might seem that creativity is one of those virtues that everyone says to have and  prides on being, but, when it all boils down to "the test" of being, just a handful does pass. To be creative, truth and my understanding, we need 4 unavoidable traits:
1- Courage. Because even if you are fearful you may be creative, but what is it worth to create if everything will stay in your brain or the closed drawer? I don't think much. You need to have courage to present your ideas to the world, Think and DO outside the box. This second part is why most seem to forget...
2- Optimism. What is it worth being creative if everything you think is brought down in flames by "Reality dictates...". If on the other hand we have it loaded on the illusionist side, nothing much happens as it becomes unplaussible.
3- Visionary. And I'm NOT meaning it as the buzzword, but rather DaVinci's meaning: "Learn how to see, as everything connects to everything, but you need to know how to observe."
4- Imagination. Einstein used to say: "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited and imagination is the main way for knowledge to arrive."

We true creatives incline to one or other of one of these virtues, more or less, they change in cycles, or shift the balance according to the occasion.
In my daily duties in this my new life I dedicate most of my time connecting everything to everything letting...

Truth be told that yes, all human beings can develop creativity, but beyond our self imposed limits, most won't dare. A friend of mine says: "Dynamite in hands of idiots will never explode". And I am NOT saying that uncreative people are stupid,. NO. What I mean is that even if all humans have the power to be, most will never use it, just a handful find a way to make it happen and worse off in different arenas. True, nobody can be everything in everything. There can only be one DaVinci.

Once you have created something, brought into fruition, make it happen, what have you, you might call yourself creative. Otherwise... Um, I rather you didn't.
My ex-accountant most likely doesn't even know the true meaning of the word... anyhow..

Most Happy Gregorian 2014! // Muy feliz 2014 Gregoriano!!

(English version below)

No?

AQUI ESTAMOS   //  HERE WE ARE

-----------------------

Let me start by wishing Y'all a brand new and very happy Gregorian 2014.
I've been through a handful of adventures and pondered through all that happened in 2013, which got me thinking a bit, even if its not "Reflection Sunday":

It's been a year since the ridiculous "end of the world" 121212. So I wonder, Why do a few apocalyptic minds think the world will end in a specific numeric day? Does the universe care for our human counting? Or is it rather a fear created by a religious something? And why is it that us in our American hemisphere forget that we are the last ones to cheer upon the each of the new Gregorian years?
Why is it that we celebrate new years 10 days after the solstice, when that is when most if not all ancient civilizations celebrated new years? I'd believe it'd be a tad bit more precise, Wouldn't it?

Why is it then, that we mark predetermined dates for certain future events? Many affirm that time does not exist... wonderful feeling, but Are we not ageing? If in fact galaxies and all of our known universe is ruled by life cycles and temporalities... Time is in fact relative to our perception of itself, that is way different to say that it odes not exist...

If we could perhaps ask a Cicada, What he thinks of dawn, he'd say it is when he spawn and dies. For them dawn is like Draculesque, they can't watch it without dieing, or so I've heard...
Or that Venus' day is 243 Eathling days long, or as a friend says, same as a Monday in corporate life. Or Jupiter's 9.9 hours long, that is the same as my last vacation... If I ask my son's Which is longer? schools morning or Saturday's? ... you get the point...

So if the Earth's universal convention is that our year is 365.25days, or rounded up a bit to 365 which is what our spaceship takes to go around our Star... which is undoubtful... good and immovable reference... Which the universe does not care at all.

Despite all of this. I do not know about you guys but every year I am one more that I make, declare and summon my own Gregorian new years' resolutions... most likely abandoning them the same as the rest of humanity before January is over...

However, everyday that goes by, truth is we feel nothing or pretty much nothing significant happens, but a handful of our days in our lives.. Unless we take perspective of our year, or worse, our whole life!! Still, there are a bunch of very important and significant events we forget or we don't even take notice... Especially unsavory or difficult events...
So Why is it the, that we obsess on Not taking notice of each of our babysteps as a real and significant step? Truth is that time goes mercilessly by, life goes by whether we want to see it or not. If in turn each of us take the reins of our own initiatives. goals and resolutions, which by the way mus't have to be December 31'st alone and thus forsaken before January is over. But rather on each morning and each dusk recount every accomplishment to remount on the next day. So we innovate and reborn each and everyday... simple.

Fantacious and idealist? Very likely. But believe me. It works.
It works and very well in both our lives and our businesses, because if we don't, we will loose track and it will die off before we even notice.

Have a very happy 2014.
