Differentiation vs. Herd Mentality // Diferenciación versus mente de rebaño

(English version Below)

¿Borrego o lobo?

In my hometown's downtown there are more than enough streets that work like huge markets. Each and every store hold pretty much the same as the next one. To the untrained eye, there is zero differentiation. I call this the "herd mentality".

How will one stand above the rest then? How will one sink below the rest? The odds are pretty much the same albeit a stupid, individual mistake or lucky strike will undoubtedly create havoc too. If the industry sinks then they all sink but apparently nobody is thinking that as they believe they protect each other, exactly as a herd of, I don't know, perhaps sheep.

Us as a buyer then, lets say a wolf, How to choose the next meal? If one stands above or below for any subtle sometimes unperceivable reason. "Eine meene" sounds about right, so Where is the strategy left?

Oh, and don't get me wrong, I do believe there is a totally valid and effective collective strategy and benefit albeit sacrificing any possible individual advantage.

I Guess it all comes down to choice, either personal or collective.  At the end of the day wolves too take collective and individual choices, depending on the moment circumstances, etc. For that we need a pinch of guts and decision abilities to innovate, aka differentiate.

So, What are you then?  Sheep or Wolf?

Darwinismo empresarial // business Darwinism

(english version below)

Queridos Lectores,

... Hmm. Me puso a pensar...

-------------------------------------

My dear readers,
Today Monday is time for a short one, but I couldn´t keep this idea in my mind. Here goes, reading an article in Businessweek, a tiny phrase caught my eye: "Competition Darwinism"
The article was about the buyers psichology... and truth is it did not mention the word or concept of competition, but what it did was focus heavily on innovation... It got me thinking....

Studying the consulting firm Monitor´s case, one of the worlds largest and by the way, dead as of last year, their strategic and cultural premise was: "Eat the competition's hrad for brakfast, whatever it costs". Evidently in more elegant terms... Point is, they made billions right up until many of their clients got bankrupt in the attempt, by cutting costs, cutting their own hands off thus losing customers to their competitions... Or the clients figured out it wasn't truly necessary, because well, there is differentiation of the species.

I wonder then, Why would anyone in their sane mind choose a "me too" company culture base?? Sad, isn't it? I mean, sad because at the end of the day, to not have the guts or the intelligence to differentiate at least a tiny bit. Of ocurse it is a safe bet, but, How safe is it ti hide under a Brontosaurus shadow?? Hmm. For the largest and stiffest, the harder the dinosaurs fall...

It is simple and logic really: Who has the best innovation to the eyes of the buyers, will surpass the competition.
