Well learnt, never forgotten. // bien aprendido nunca olvidado

(English version below)

Queridos lectores,

-------------------------------------------------------

My Dear Readers,

It's been almost two years since I was going through a very rough patch where I wrinkled my car, and along the same season I was advised to get an interview with a Doctor "whocareswhothecrap", who told me something like: "if you can't specialize in something you are worth sh**t" and "although I started teaching English it is obvious to me I could never go back to do so again."

It is my experience which proves this arrogant douche wrong who says has a PhD in, most likely some "study in the useless". And today I remembered him because despite a few bruises who reminded me of the Gods of Valhala, I was also reminded about the old saying: "that who is correctly learnt shall never be forgotten". And yet again, after past 20 years it's been, since I was a preteen in my first job in a car-shop where I learnt  few things about bodywork.

during my years as an industrial, I characterized myself of showing my people how things could be done especially when the did not believe it was possible I proved them wrong, everytime. I never minded getting myself dirty, bruised or cut.

In these last few months I was a bit skeptical even a bit scared as I must confess I am a bit rusty. But something that never crossed my mind was "I'm too much for me to do this kind of jobs or things.." It did happen that I do not have the proper tools and after twentysome years... Eventually I dove in so I thought: "what is the worst that can happen..."

Found a couple of wood chunks, hammer and an improvised workbench... Now at least my cars door opens without a glitch, it doesn't look wrinkled, enough so the transit authority won't mind me. And the best scenario I paint it and [almost] as new.

I did find myself doing today's workout with a hammer, I mean, Thor's thing and all...

This guy doctor thing, I must accept he did teach me a thing or two, but most likely quite far away from what he hoped he'd be teaching me:
  • There's one life  fact to remember: where you came form to know where you're going.
  • Well learnt, rusty but never forgotten.
  • Though it might be more comfortable for someone else to do it, there is nothing that impedes you from doing it well since you are the same person.
  • Chase Perfection knowing full well is unobtainable.
  • PhDs are worth squat if they turn you into an arrogant piece of sh*t. Because arrogance is always worth sh*t, as all supervillains will never learn.
  • Specializing in bolts is worth squat if the world now is run by nails and glues; or nails if is a lot nicer to watch the flowers bloom and smile at life...
PS: Sorry I had to find a reason to write to you about this Doctorthingy Jorge, otherwise I´d explode..!

Dilema del innovador // Innovator´s Dilemma

(English version below)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few days ago I was in an interview with a client that introduced me to a friend of his, a Lady that works for some guys in a business that, for what they told me, they have an awesome disruptive chemical technology... I haven't seen it for myself just yet. But, and it is a huge but, the guys running the business are lacking the very much needed cojones to making it disruptive. This lady who is in the sales department not only is she constantly denied prospecting projects to find more customers, but she was told just last week that her base salary was gone as they "had to cut expenses"...
(Remember my previous posts regarding "cutting one selves' hands?" and "the cousin of my friend?", yes apparently history repeats itself over and over... humans after all.)

I do say they lack cojones because as I am told, they have 3 customer accounts which are handled by 10 salespersons out of which they all live, or rather lived and are just surviving. At the same time all the salespeoples' salaries are cut or denied which most likely they will all, or at least they all should jump ship. Believe me, been there myself twice already, So I do recognize all the symptoms.

There is also the horrendous happenstance that this is right after the bosses are returning from their European vacation posing and parading presumptuously, disrespectfully and irresponsibly around the office with ostentatious thousand Euro souvenirs.... (hmm, maybe that is it, in order to pay for their vacation they cut the other peoples salaries. Very responsible of them' bosses...)

Point is, Clay Christiensen defines the Innovator's Dilemma as the position when a businessperson finds himself when, though having full knowledge of the imperative need to innovate, he only performs tiny babysteps maybe as an incremental innovation, complying only what he thinks his customers are expecting; thus finding himself vulnerable to newcomers competitive disruption ways.
Studying this a bit, he says: "what he thinks his customer expects...", that is, a game of perception versus expectations, isn't it?

So, if this first comer perception was absolutely perfect that he is totally complying with his customers expectation, then Why is there space for the new disruptors, usually by new young companies and bash all their "bones" up?

Geoffrey Moore defines the older's incapacity (either people or organizations) to convert or reinvent themselves as innovators as "trying to write with the wrong hand", That is, the whole structure is there, the knowledge is clearly there but it becomes a close to superhuman effort to achieve. Believe me, I know. A long time ago I broke my writing hand. During my 2 month long cast, my notebooks, though my handwriting is not the nicest, those were just plain illegible!

Even businesses that consider themselves as strong innovators. Why would they stop? At some point all of them just stop being disruptive. So Kaput. Eventually they all die... All of them. In my other posts I write about a few examples that they all suffer, following the analogy, of "brain arthritis" of sorts... That is, too frequently they know what they need to do, but the innovation ability isn't there anymore, it gets lost with time by lack of practice, comfort zone, fear, etc, etc... The result is, as always leaving a gap, thus the field to new young proposals.

Right now, many are writing in speculation about Apple and Microsoft which are going through their own Innovator's Dilemma, failing with everything up until now. Lets see what happens... Ford went through their own rite of passage a few years back, but so far they knew how to revert themselves. Only time will tell if it was enough or not. In the mean time, there is a new player in town and so far is breaking every bone in the yard: Tesla Motors...

Now back to the Lady: The Innovator's Dilemma here is, they are taking tiny babysteps in their new customer' quest, their prospecting and marketing campaign for their, lets keep it as interesting technology. So then I must ask: Why?

If there's nothing iffy to hide, then there is only one simple and agonizing answer: arrogance, which in turn are unavoidably together with paralyzing fears, for which paradoxically the only possible cure is humility. They do have the product, the infrastructure, the giant customers just waiting for a product they have never even heard of. These guys don't even need a competition to sink them, they are doing a fine job by themselves. They are their own worst enemy, all by blinding absurd arrogance. (not that there is non-absurd arrogance, right?..) At least when you have a competition, you can find an absurd justification to blame...

My only advice was: " Jump, 'cause that Titanic has ice on the deck already..! oh, and tell them to give me a call..."

Preguntas e innovación, ¿Que tienen que ver? // Questions and innovation, Where's the relation?

(English version below)

---------------------------------------------

Stupid questions... all of us have feared making a stupid question. It is said that: "there are no stupid questions, just stupids who do not ask."

For me the only stupid questions are the ones made when the asker did not listen. I do agree and guess that it is still preferable to clear the doubt before it gets deeper...

In our culture we have a terribly destructive, way too popular phrase: "curiosity killed the cat"... to what I always say, "it did not die with the doubt"

Same as Einstein I am curiously obsessed (it is the only thing I dare compare myself to the master, in the appetite to learn) According to legend, his mantra was: "if only I had the right question"

Peter Drucker, the innovation guru said: "worst mistakes are made not by having the wrong answer but rather the wrong question"

In my other post about statistics I put into your kind consideration my dear readers, the premise and examples of mistakes made by wrong interpretation of questions that will later form the statistics.

Therefore the art and science of disruptive innovation is in making the best questions possible and having great creativity to interpret the answers. Undoubtedly and unavoidably innovation, capacity of change and ability to adapt must have a good dose of curiosity and creativity.

Funny how most market research tools and techniques are created around questions, which is great, of course, but the mistakes are made in the interpretation of the answers ergo the questions are not well made.

Steve Jobs said: "Do not ask the people what they want, we must show them" And Henry Ford said: "If I'd ask the people what they wanted they'd say faster horses"

Both Jobs and Ford knew how to make the exact questions and interpret the answers with great creativity. Ford knew how to interpret the answer: "faster horses" by "what I want is to get there faster than any horse can and will run"

Funny, I have interviewed with a few varied discipline PhDs, how they tend not to ask any questions, none...  Wonder why?

In my experience I've found that atypical people with enough generalist knowledge and experience overall, curious and creative enough and even with little specific experience, they always have the best questions... therefore the best solutions.

Anyone out there has any questions for me? I guarantee I have more than a few for you!
