Well learnt, never forgotten. // bien aprendido nunca olvidado

(English version below)

Queridos lectores,

-------------------------------------------------------

My Dear Readers,

It's been almost two years since I was going through a very rough patch where I wrinkled my car, and along the same season I was advised to get an interview with a Doctor "whocareswhothecrap", who told me something like: "if you can't specialize in something you are worth sh**t" and "although I started teaching English it is obvious to me I could never go back to do so again."

It is my experience which proves this arrogant douche wrong who says has a PhD in, most likely some "study in the useless". And today I remembered him because despite a few bruises who reminded me of the Gods of Valhala, I was also reminded about the old saying: "that who is correctly learnt shall never be forgotten". And yet again, after past 20 years it's been, since I was a preteen in my first job in a car-shop where I learnt  few things about bodywork.

during my years as an industrial, I characterized myself of showing my people how things could be done especially when the did not believe it was possible I proved them wrong, everytime. I never minded getting myself dirty, bruised or cut.

In these last few months I was a bit skeptical even a bit scared as I must confess I am a bit rusty. But something that never crossed my mind was "I'm too much for me to do this kind of jobs or things.." It did happen that I do not have the proper tools and after twentysome years... Eventually I dove in so I thought: "what is the worst that can happen..."

Found a couple of wood chunks, hammer and an improvised workbench... Now at least my cars door opens without a glitch, it doesn't look wrinkled, enough so the transit authority won't mind me. And the best scenario I paint it and [almost] as new.

I did find myself doing today's workout with a hammer, I mean, Thor's thing and all...

This guy doctor thing, I must accept he did teach me a thing or two, but most likely quite far away from what he hoped he'd be teaching me:
  • There's one life  fact to remember: where you came form to know where you're going.
  • Well learnt, rusty but never forgotten.
  • Though it might be more comfortable for someone else to do it, there is nothing that impedes you from doing it well since you are the same person.
  • Chase Perfection knowing full well is unobtainable.
  • PhDs are worth squat if they turn you into an arrogant piece of sh*t. Because arrogance is always worth sh*t, as all supervillains will never learn.
  • Specializing in bolts is worth squat if the world now is run by nails and glues; or nails if is a lot nicer to watch the flowers bloom and smile at life...
PS: Sorry I had to find a reason to write to you about this Doctorthingy Jorge, otherwise I´d explode..!

The reason why all of the 70% Of innovations fail.

(English version below)

Linda paradoja, no?

--------------------------------------------------

70% Of innovations fail. True. but Why? Hasn't anybody asked themselves, Why?

Though true that it is a statistic, by far and very far it is NOT a probabilistic number. In my 15 years of processes and innovation culture experience, my conclusion is that 70% of innovations fail for one reason: Idiotic and useless search for the absolute perfection.

All of us humans search, quest, perfection. Except maybe mediocres... of course, they do search the perfect justified, rationalized, lazy, no-risk middle... anyway... Point is:

Absolute perfection does not and will never exist. In innovation processes, a bit less.

FEAR of imperfection is and will always be what halts us: "What will the cute, beautiful girl (or guy) will siay if I talk to her(him)?? better say nothing..." we end up choking... It might have just happened that the cute girl (or guy) was waiting for us to come by and say Hi, but out of fear, nothing happened. I already had the NO, What had I to lose? maybe a bit of EGO... and that'd be it.

Same happens with commercial innovation: "What will people say? My audience? my stakeholders and investors??..." Of course it matters!! but a lot less than any inaction.

Every innovation specialist as myself, we say that a high perfection percentage  will be enough. How High is enough? Well, it is relative to a bunch of different factors and metrics of course, starting with the product, service and circumstances themselves. Mediocre? Never!

There are hundreds, thousands of product examples that go out to market and flunk on every year. Many of them are reborn even stronger. Many times in hands of others. I ask then, Why not in our own hands? Why would we voluntarily leave a golden opportunity pass onto someone else to grab the success?
Xerox's Star OS and mouse rekindle in Apple's IBM and Microsoft's hands
Sony's MP3 in Apple's hands
Microsoft's tablet in Apple's hands... Just to mention a few recent cases.

In my 15 years I have launched a bit under 100 products to market. Some quite successful, some not so much and some died trying. It'd be too arrogant of me to pretend saying that all of them were a commercial success. Nobody can say that. What Nobody says is that all of the ones that died trying were key steppingstones to the ones that became successful! Thus were a success of sorts.

In the "glass half empty... in truth it is full of at least air!" If you don't value air, I'd invite you to stop breathing now...

So at the end of the day, ALL were successful one way or another. The ones win low to no sales allowed us to find the ones that were hugely successful, which otherwise we'd never had found. If I listened to all the oppositioners, we would've never had any successful ones. Nice paradox. The skill lies in seeing, in visualizing, invisioning the potential though partial as it may be or through a path not even heard of.  At times it is even matter of letting things decide by themselves, to state it in some raw form. Of course we enter the 'control-freak's or mega-focused nightmare´s realm.'...

Viagra, resounding commercial failure for years. That is of course until a visionary commercializes it with a never before thought-of intent.

Perfect success measure, as most investors or bosses demands is mostly absurd. There is not enough people on the planet to let everybody's american rotten-zillionaire dreams to hand out to everybody. So, Is that enough reason to abandon all of the ideas? I do not think so, because partial, small successes, even the ones considered as failures in truth are stepping stones for some to truly reach rotten-zillionaire status.

Want something with zero risks? Might as well stop breathing because that is the only true no-risk option.

Finally, the reason why eventually, a giant majority of times people abandon, mostly even before they start... "because there is not enough focus, perfection or [whatever]..."

That is a bunch of rationalized mediocrity. Sorry.

¿Que tan dificil puede ser?? // How hard can that be??

(English version below)

Yo he trabajado mucho con pesimistas.

--------------------------------------------

How hard can it be??

That is the question every optimist makes and instantaneously every pessimist react in convulsion nervous attack on the floor - my apologies if you are a pessimist, don-t you worry, I'll happily help you up -

I confess: I am an optimistic-realist. Pessimists do not believe in anything about not a thing. nothing about nothing.... To make things worst my natural enthusiasm is easily confused by sheer optimism and stupidity and more over by grey pessimistic minds, scaring them and convulsing them even more ... Anyway,

" Pessimists see a problem in every opportunity. Optimists see an opportunity in every problem" - Winston Churchill

I have worked with more than a fair share of pessimists. In fact, my wife is one, and I still love her. And it is funny how we react so very different to every crisis. For larger the crisis the more I turn to optimism, the more my wife into a pessimism. It is like the forces of the universe would balance each other out. At the end of the day, I keep sanity and faith together, otherwise might as well die.

To be a true realist allows me to see the whole spectrum of steps to get to the target without losing ground. I mean, I know all to well I am not Superman and that I cannot fly over to the next building. I know when I see a 2 yard gap and might as well not jump otherwise I'll end up stuck somewhere undesirably. Mi wife sees nothing but the gigantic hole larger than the Mariana's Trench and in fact has already seen my skull splattered right in the bottom, obviously that is fear speaking.

"To succeed, don´t fight the old, built on the new"- Socrates

This has obviously happened to me in the professional real as well. In EVERY project I have either started, implemented, managed or otherwise I have found multiple objections, there is always the NO guy. In fact that is how I have learned that, as long as the speech is logical and well founded it enriches the project itself; in metaphorical terms, that may be he's got a different measuring scale or a different point of view than mine to gauge the space between buildings, or she's got a sixth sense that she knows it will rain and the roof will be wet that day, making the surface slippery, avoiding my skull to thunder on the bottom of the Grand Canyon dragging everyone else involved.

"Losers are those who are afraid of losing" -  Robert Kiyosaki

Even with more than enough objections I have achieved, maybe rightfully because all the opposition more than satisfactory results. However, most of the times all our health has been compromised, maybe that could have been avoided too, most likely I will never know. What I do know now is how to turn most objections into productive and effective motion, and also preventing oppositors making stupidities. In one case early in my career, a group of skeptical oppositors during an important crisis we went through, stole funds off the project rendering it impossible to operate. Obvious, legal troubles came rolling in over them.

“Humanity certainly needs practical men, who get the most out of their work, and, without forgetting the general good, safeguard their own interests. But humanity also needs dreamers, for whom the disinterested development of an enterprise is so captivating that it becomes impossible for them to devote their care to their own material profit.” - Marie Curie

For the duration of my life, every day, not only my professional years I have turned objections into productive proposals. I have always said that with more points of views the 3D image gets a lot clearer. The point is to grow form each individual point of view and in fact if it is completely contrary it will add more value. The true difficulty lies in listening and growing out from all those, without being discriminatory which is by the way natural and counter-instinctive. doesn't matter where it comes from and that is why almost nobody does it. I shall never destroy or undermine it as nobody knows how important it can be, or not. But no one will know ever if nobody listens.

The point is that in many of my posts and other professionals including Forbes, Harvard, Oxford, MIT, Businessweek and many, many more, we acknowledge that making something new is as unavoidable as necessary and every time it upbrings risks. The point is to minimize those risks by being realists, but if you stay in a pessimistic state of mind, any other optimist will get to the cake before YOU.

So I ask dear readers: Who do you want to team up with??  and How difficult can it be?? Well, there's nothing more dangerous than nothing or even a halfass tryout, Is there??

If you are a pessimist, just 'fess up, help is here.

Que me enseñaron los mejores coaches de la historia / What did the best coaches in history taught me

  • John Wooden (Basketball)
  • Dean Smith (Basketball)
  • Bear Bryant (Football)
  • Red Auerbach (Basketball)
  • Scotty Bowman (Hockey)
  • Mike Krzyzewski (Basketball)
  • Phil Jackson (Basketball)
  • Dan Gable (Wrestling)
  • Vince Lombardi (Football)

Quieres llegar lejos y bien, vamos acompañados" - proverbio africano

    Todo depende de la perspectiva
    It's all matter of perspective

    "20 segundos de valor
     insano y te prometo
     algo maravilloso saldra de ello"

  • John Wooden (College Basketball)
  • Dean Smith (College Basketball)
  • Bear Bryant (Professional Football)
  • Vince Lombardi (Professional Football)
  • Red Auerbach (Professional Basketball)
  • Scotty Bowman (Professional Hockey)
  • Mike Krzyzewski (College Basketball)
  • Phil Jackson (Professional Basketball)
  • Dan Gable (College Wrestling)

  • These are some of the best coaches in american sport history. As any good coach knows enough as to how to play the game. But most of all have the vision skill. To observe the opponent and their weaknesses, to observe the field and catch its defects; to observe ones players and know their pros and weaknesses.

The last one, Vince Lombardi - I talk a bit about him because I am a Football fan- was one of the most victorious coaches in the history of the game. He created the NFL.

But how funny it is that None of this awesome coaches scored a point on the field. EVER.

This is comparable to what we consultants do. We are not going to compete or race who is better me or you -my client- in your expertise. I do not need to know how to cook to know that you have a failing restaurant because of lousy service (please check my older post regarding a restaurant case) . Or any other industry for that matter. Examples are plenty in my other posts.

It is being a strategist to take advantage of what YOU have with what I have, having a broader perspective and a fresher sight.  As they say:

"Two heads think better than one, four eyes see better than two, and four hands do better than two"

"If you want to get there  fast, go at it alone. If you want to go far and well, lets go together" - African Proverb
