Environmentalism and buisness economics // Ambientalismo y economia empresarial

(English version below)

---------------------------------

Appologies for my brutal absence, between my computers' sudden suicide by falling in a precipice. As the saying goes: It's not the fall that kills, but the sudden stop; and that I've been teaching a class to industrials and businesspeople and this is what I wanted to talk, type to you about.

It turned to be quite interesting that everyone, no matter the size, from micros (1 person business) to 600 employees (or more), just a handful had ideas of how to save money and at the same time help the environment.

It so seems that we all have a preinstalled software in our brains the notion that any environmental implementation is cost rather than investment. A consciousness act rather than a money must.

On the other hand, we do have ideas but it always revolve in two maybe three and along the same lines to do: lightbulbs, fix water leaks and use less paper...

Another quite jaw-dropping fact was that, not only one but two multinational corporations found huge savings... even with their in-house 6Sigma blackbelts, environmental and sustainability department experts... dozens of employees dedicating their whole check-in schedule to find such, and hadn't some even truly obvious... One of them, with only $50,000 investment came about to save $1,500,000 per year...

I attribute this to 5 factors:
1-shop blindness
2-overconfidence, or to that defect, fear
3-supervision and bureaucratic systems which unavoidably have redundancies
4-Ill-conceived savings
5- and most IMPORTANTLY: metrics were all wrong

It just so happens that 6Sigma and most financial methods are based on percentages, not on absolute values, giving way to very important savings or rather losses. For what I've seen and experienced, if there is no mental change, then there will never be any change.

Out of my pupils, the one resounding a bit more, not to demerit any of the others is a school that goes through 20,000 liters (about 6,000 gallons) of water per week. We'll see how we got at saving them, my initial projections are about half saved... And no, it's not leaks.

infectar, mutar, o morir // infect, mutate or die.

(english version below)

Dear readers, after a brief family crisis and a heavy project overload, I'm back form my brief absence.

I wanted to type a bit about eco-innovation ad a small reflection... This is clearly a overexploited subject in most contexts and media... I do get tired too, because truth is we get an overbearing, gut wrenching guilt and impotence feelings, sometimes over to absurd levels, that is, to the ones that care about the health of out children and other descendants. Another truth is that daily routine and human ecosystem is built in such a way that we forget there is a world within our tiny planet, but out there beyond the city walls which in truth is very sick. Dr. M.L.King and Einstein used to say in a very similar way: "Hell is filled with people who noticed something was wrong and did nothing to remedy it."

Also true is that most environmentalist information is loaded with sensationalism and evidently it is made that way to create a conscience , but some do over do it. Even come to the absurd to print paper with: "save some trees, don´t use paper.."

A true pillar is that all human activity causes effects, and by the way society is built, most are inescapable. Lets say we got to a mountain somewhere as a hermit, - that is if we can find a ´virgin´ patch of land owned by no one, or we could afford it ourselves, so good luck with that - anyway, it just so happens that anything we do will harm in some way that tiny environment. We come into the "existence and observation paradox." According to the quantum physics observation law, the observed particle will change its behavior just for the reason of being watched. Extrapolating that to the human existence, the habitat will change its behavior and evidently the other way around too.

Now, in this last example, we find a patch of Forrest  jungle, whatever you please with a cave, water stream, etc... We limit our fire use, we eat whatever its there, etc. What would make this micro-environment sustainable? By principle our existence will be noticed, but the damage should be the least permanent possible. That is "the environment will change its behavior" will kick in it will compensate our breaths CO2 by the foliage, the seed in our food will bloom again, the broken branches for our fire will sprout, the ashes are fertilizing, etc. So the microecosystem will promptly autoregenerate.

The problem is we are 7,000,000,000 humans on Earth, consuming resources as if there was no tomorrow. According to some statistics we have around 50 years or so natural resources worth for not only human, but planetary subsistence. I do not know that, so I will not judge.

Humans have been around for roughly 20,000years. versus 13.5trillion whatever years of life existence on the planet, and considering 99% was extinct well beyond 20,000years before, well ,that was not human´s fault, but too many is.

The sun has, I believe 1,2, 5, 12, 80, 150, 500, 1000 y 5000 year cycles. Evidently all scientific records go back 150 years only. PRevious to that is basically paleontology or whatever kind of studies. It just so happens that about 500 years ago was the hottest few years of human history. Of course that GHGs and global warming is a fact, and I guess that if 500 years ago the planet had the same GHG levels as we do today, most land animals would be extinct by drowning today was we know them. I do not know back when, Jurassic or whatever, GHG levels were a lot higher than today, but that was clearly before the Ice Ages. That would have been some toasty dinosaur or whomever summers.

Also true that this are by no way of reason to continue doing stupid damage as we all do everyday.

We as humans cannot turn back the clock, but starting at where we are at, we have plenty to do in our own tiny little corner of our world, every day.

In a pretty lousy movie I saw many years ago, the only respectable part of the movie was its opening phrase, and it was the definition of virus: "biological entity who invades the hosts body, and with total disregard if the host dies, it consumes every available resource the host has unlit either the host dies or mutates. And the virus has 3 options: mutates, dies or changes hosts".

Our host is our planet. No way of escaping that. And true, our Earth has its own mutating mechanisms: Ice Ages, jelly fish overpopulation, superhuracanes, etc. But apparently humans are quicker in doing stupidities.

Assuming we do not have another host to go to as technology is still too far away to do so, we have the other 2 options: either we mutate or die.

What we can do is we can mutate our conscience, innovate within for the greater good. OH, and by the way, lets do business, which is apparently what my treehugger friends tend to forget and capitalists tend to dismiss. That is both save the planet and do business is not only possible but a must.

Um, that is why I skipped way too many days to blog out.

Preguntas e innovación, ¿Que tienen que ver? // Questions and innovation, Where's the relation?

(English version below)

---------------------------------------------

Stupid questions... all of us have feared making a stupid question. It is said that: "there are no stupid questions, just stupids who do not ask."

For me the only stupid questions are the ones made when the asker did not listen. I do agree and guess that it is still preferable to clear the doubt before it gets deeper...

In our culture we have a terribly destructive, way too popular phrase: "curiosity killed the cat"... to what I always say, "it did not die with the doubt"

Same as Einstein I am curiously obsessed (it is the only thing I dare compare myself to the master, in the appetite to learn) According to legend, his mantra was: "if only I had the right question"

Peter Drucker, the innovation guru said: "worst mistakes are made not by having the wrong answer but rather the wrong question"

In my other post about statistics I put into your kind consideration my dear readers, the premise and examples of mistakes made by wrong interpretation of questions that will later form the statistics.

Therefore the art and science of disruptive innovation is in making the best questions possible and having great creativity to interpret the answers. Undoubtedly and unavoidably innovation, capacity of change and ability to adapt must have a good dose of curiosity and creativity.

Funny how most market research tools and techniques are created around questions, which is great, of course, but the mistakes are made in the interpretation of the answers ergo the questions are not well made.

Steve Jobs said: "Do not ask the people what they want, we must show them" And Henry Ford said: "If I'd ask the people what they wanted they'd say faster horses"

Both Jobs and Ford knew how to make the exact questions and interpret the answers with great creativity. Ford knew how to interpret the answer: "faster horses" by "what I want is to get there faster than any horse can and will run"

Funny, I have interviewed with a few varied discipline PhDs, how they tend not to ask any questions, none...  Wonder why?

In my experience I've found that atypical people with enough generalist knowledge and experience overall, curious and creative enough and even with little specific experience, they always have the best questions... therefore the best solutions.

Anyone out there has any questions for me? I guarantee I have more than a few for you!

¿Porque nadie quiere ayuda? // Why does nobody want any help?

(English version below)

¿A triunfar? ¿Hacer negocios en grande? ¿Mejorar? Arriesgarse  arriesgarse a QUE? ¿Al cambio? ¿A algo nuevo?

NEVER TRY, NEVER FAIL. IT'S ALL THE SAME
TRY AGAIN, FAIL AGAIN, FAIL BETTER

--------------------------------------------------

Postecliptic Friday night insight: Why does nobody want help?

Obviously this is an exaggeration because if it was in absolute terms I'd be out of business, but unfortunately for humans, not so much.

Last weekend I spent a while with a couple of young quite nice sisters with a small struggling business, as most, and me with my adventurous and chivalrous self, besides my reasonable amount of knowledge of what they spoke as their troubled areas, I proposed to be of assistance. A relative simple Market entry and USP case as many I've performed successfully before.

I called them, the youngest sibling answers and tells me they'd decided to go at it alone because I'd be too expensive... Dear readers, I haven't spoken a word about my costs, only about my expertise...

the point of today's reflection is: Why would this girls want to go at it alone? Cost? I never uttered a word regarding money, I am thankful they thought of me being expensive... Lack of experience? By far I have more than they do and of course there's plenty I do not know yet. Specialized experience? I will not compete with them, I will compliment them in their uncovered areas... Fear of being eaten?... Nah, They may have been cute, but, nah. Today I have a vegan appetite...

So I ponder, maybe fear. but fear to WHAT? To succeed? make good business? Improve? Risk? Risk What? Change? Something New? Of course there's nothing more dangerous than not risking! I mean, I am not a gold coin to be welcome everywhere, I Know all too well.  What is true is that sometimes my passion to do things right comes across as arrogance... funny how that gets confused... And it is perfectly all right to want to things on one's own, sometimes, and that usually that ends up happening, either it's because it is a challenge for oneself or simply we couldn't find someone to walk among us.... humans are a social animal after all...

Funny how each of our social culture's mark our own conduct patterns into appreciation or misinterpretation in each case... And this my dear readers is where it collides and matches with business context, or whatever it may be in reality, in case you missed it. At the end of the day, business is ultimately made out by humans for humans, to the misfortune of many.

So then this morning's Eureka was: EGO. Far too many people on this planet gets drowned in a glass of water or sometimes legendary Floods; Still we do not accept the helping hand because we do not know how to, as we do not know our own limitations, I've also learned that all too well. Our ego has been bruised well enough as to have to appear strong, as I now know all too well... What I do not know is, and most likely I will never know is the why.

And for the ladies, I don't know really, I'd like to help and for them to be able to accept my help as many other people at any corner of the world as mine... maybe not my help per say, but help...

Funny how our own personality, our own mind is the same thing that holds us back...

Que me dice tu firma de ti? // What can I learn from your signature??

(English version below)

---------------------------------------

In a document published by Maryland University profesor Nick Seybert he makes a quite interesting conclusion: He says that the signature size is a tell regarding if a person is rather narcissistic thus arrogant or not. Conclusion given by many graphologists before him. what makes me smile in appreciation is that now, whoever has read my blogposts since the beginning know what I think of arrogance, and now professor Seybert has made strong reference to the dangers to an organization with a clear symptomatology to prove my theory.

He also infers that people with large signatures has almost no patent registrations, concluding that they lack innovation spirit, and they also have a ton more labor disputes... Hmm, interesting.

I is important to clarify that the size is described by 3 variables: square footage or impression area, amount of letters and traces. For more traces and letters, more arrogance.

I wonder why, knowing a tiny bit of graphology myself, I did not see that my former assistant, micro-tiny but with hundreds of traces all on top of the other as per a navel-fur-ball looking would eventually betray me? Go wonder. That's how I learned.

Anyway: Arrogance Kills Businesses.  Of course professor Seybert does not state it like that, he only states that Rupert Murdoch has a gigantic signature... point taken.

I guess that as everything worth in life it's a matter of balance, of fair equilibrium.

PS: Whoever knows me well knows my signature is 3 traces drawing a single letter... I've asked professor Seybert his take on that, hope he answers, someday...

Why aren't we kind and grateful? // Porque somos tan malagradecidos??

(English version below)

In this, my #50 blogpost I have an insight: The art of kindness and cordiality is lost.

A wise man once said "being kind means you are brave" . Way too often when I give thanks or offer my helping to someone, they look at me with a "What's wrong" As if I'd smooched them with a french kiss or something...
-Not that planting a good french kiss to someone you really like is bad, the slap in the face that usually follows is, I mean, my wife's ... Anyway, current social 'norms'withstanding and my jaw is sadly intact -

The point is, Why aren't we all more kind to people deserving kindness and thankfulness???
Or help people that need our help??

According to a Harvard study of well over 3000 businesses, around 70% of employees feel unappreciated and unmotivated; 80% of reasons for quitting are because people feel unappreciated!!

A boss I had said to me on my first day on the job: "Iif you do it well it's your job, you do it bad it's your problem".. What kind of guide and motivation is that!?! Truth is, I never knew what was rightfully, mediocre or badly done because I never received any kind of praise, thus orientation, just because of my boss' ludicrous and absurd fears!!

Of course by now some of you my kind readers are thinking "I do it like that because if I praise someone they will not work as hard..."  I'm sorry, THAT is fear. What causes people to Stop working is no feeling motivated enough. And a business like the one I had that boss, it's truly a FEAR culture business, and here's why:

I did my job half way because of fear. I did not excel, out of fear of missing the mark. I did because of fear of being fired. I stopped myself of doing good things, out of fear. And we were over 4000 employees that we did what we did, everything half way, out of fear.

When I left, exhausted by the way, I could see. It was a MEDIOCRE culture created that way because of fear of being grateful... What a shame.

"Never confuse my kindness for weakness, my silence for ignorance, or my calmness for acceptance" - Samurai Proverb

In contrast, when I had employees of my own, It was very difficult for me to break the cultural paradigms and habits of ruling by fear. I am also saying that if something is WRONG, you must act accordingly. I fired tons of people that misinterpreted my kindness. It was people that was eventually going to explode. It was people that did NOT deserve a healthy working environment, anyway.

But if there is something RIGHT we must praise. It is horribly noticeable that most people all around the world is famished for being appreciated. So much so, that people who is appreciative are stared at as aliens from another galaxy. Truth is we do not know how to behave when someone is, which is weird, which it shouldn't be... Truth is also, to receive one must know how to give to... to the deserving.

Ok, not a french kiss, not every time, but at least a palm in the back, a smile and an :"awesome, well done, keep improving" This by the way its the key. This way I accomplished many miracles.

That is: It is good business to be kind and thankful.

// "Which is the innovation strategy Key?"

... Y pues yo, yo siempre busco el 'Como Si..."

My dear Reades, here´s my spring Friday's reflection:

today one client asked me: "Which is the key to innovation?" obviously he made my face go What, logical question to make though, and never before asked.

It so happens that all the research done so far by experts say that innovation is infested with paradoxes.

The experts so say that one of the barriers for innovation is the experts themselves, because knowing too much rightly so impede innovation, and this is because most experts start to believe they know everything there is under the sun, so the lose their amazement capacity, so every question has an answer, usually negative.
-Warren Buffet investment expert did not invest in 1979's Microsoft...
-Bill Gates said in 1995 that the internet was worthless...

The point is, yes it is very important to know and learn, but it is as much important to be open to possibilities, to try, to experiment enough. Thomas Edison said that he already knew 10000 ways of how that wouldn't work, and still he tried again.

They say that most traditional orthogonal and orthodox methods are convergent, when the innovators are divergents, which put most people head over heels, including experts. Analysis, sinthesis, exploratory and creative tools are used, all at once.
-Steve Jobs not even once used a traditional market research, skipping every method and metric...

In real disruptive innovation, for more disruption, less data. There are innovations where there is simply no exploration map.
-Cristopher Columbis knew there would be sea, so he jumped on a boat...
-Edmund Hillary knew it would be chilly, so he packed his sweater...

Funny how some of the big industries say they are innovative when everything they do is perfect the well known... Safe baby steps, sometimes Too safe. Air transport has been decades since their last disruptive innovation. I do agree that, as much as I'd like to fly in an experimental vessel, my wife as well as most of humanity wouldn't like that.
Automotive industry has also been decades since their last disruption, now aparently there's healthy noise with the Hidrogen Cells, a few here and there as addoptation of other technologies, some are wonderful, dont get me wrong, but the last piece of real disruption and has since faded away was the Hibrid motors.. The electric motors are well over 100 years old, so...
- Henry Ford said that if he'd taken the safe route, he'd just tried to invent a faster horse.

As business people we suffer two paradoxes which impede innovation, one is called Shop Blindness, that is, we are so bottled up in our daily routine that we only pay attention to what is urgent and not so to what is needed and important. I do believe that something very important ofr business survival is growth, ergo innovation... The second paradox is that we take such good care of our "babies" that we don't want to ris anything, "nothing shall touch it", and "nobody knows mre than I do" ... Me being father of 9 year old twin boys I know how to desire nothing touches them.I am also an entrepreneur and businessman so I do know that which rhymes to closely together.

but to not want your child to walk or run in fear of him falling, or I will not teach him how to swim in fear of... blah, run, swim, eat are new things... I do want my boys to go to the olympic games, but if  I don't teach him how to swim or something then it becomes an absolute impossibility. Wow, javeline, rowing, wresling, horses, archery, gym... any and all have risks. ... I do know how to swim and pretty well, but I'd rather get them a good teacher... So why impair our Other child, that is, our own businesses?? Why do we stubbornly clash with our own limits without getting some help or any risks??...

These are the basic paradoxes but with some depth and I can assure you that these are the reasons most, some say 70% of strategic and innovation initiatives fail. Because by human inertia there is a 70% chance that these counterintuitive paradoxes will impair and kill the initiative, plus the failure factors by themselves, out of which I have also written some stuff about it, and very likely I'm missing some, so keep posted.

By the way,the answer I gave my client was: "The key is in the exploration, in venturing into unknown territories, sometimes without a map beacuse innovation itself is sometimes creating the map. That is scary to many. Our Earth's surface is all mapped out and we still are finding new earthbound creatures never studied before... Innovation is in the observation and amazement capacity, in being humble enough to say: 'nevery thought of that' along 'why not'... It is in the people who ask everything, and thinks different even better, in stepping out of the comfort zone. Adn for this to become a strategy, and after that a culture it has to be a continuous process with one objective, a reason of being and of course a How and With what. It is a commitment, because as you can see in my other posts, the Not doing brings dire survival consequences, aka business death... and me, I alway look for the "Where's the Yes?"....
