Linkedin, So What´ up? // ¿Que se y te trae Linkedin?

(English version below)

---------------
When I started using Linkedin, it was a bit late. I just lost my job without a penny on me and was obviously against the clock. I started reaching out to as many recruiters, HR and headhunters as the system allowed me to, as I couldn't grasp the ones I wanted to as most were 3rd or 5th degrees away. So my strategy was to accept and send as many invitations as possible to, you know, meet people I couldn't actually meet in person. I do believe that HR & HH peoples' jobs IS to meet people to recruit the best possible and if that connection is not the best, perhaps I do know their best fit for You, you know, quid-pro-quo. I was amazed as to how many did not accept my invitation and actually got into trouble with Linkedin's controversial rules.
Back to the point. If Linkedin system allowed me to reach out and connect to anyone I wished to create a relationship, I wouldn't have had to make such acrobatics to accomplish so. The principle of a virtual social network basic premise is, or at least it should be, to meet people you don't know... If I do know you, then Why in the world would I need Linkedin for? There is a bunch of abusive people in every social network, true, but that shouldn't deter honest people to do what the tool is designed to do: Meet people. Ignoring and Blocking tools are meant against abusive people, once they've proven they are abusive. How can you tell one is, if you've never been connected?
Twitter just as well, they have their antispammer fear up to Wazoo that I am absolutely certain their algorithms are all upside-down, but what do I know.
Anyway, Over the first few months I logged into the jobs forums, pretty much none had a "you have X connections to the job poster". Now I do have at least one second degree connection to most job postings, and the ratio of answered and invitation to a meeting or interview did increase dramatically, even though most connections that accepted me and I have never met. I realized that there is enough people happy to help YOU as most accept, or at least should accept the fact that YOU NEVER KNOW WHO WILL YOU NEED TOMORROW, There is a proverb that goes: "There is always a reason you'll meet people, either they will add something to your life, or you are going to do so to theirs". So I say, might as well start connecting Today.
And yes, most of business I have today is in direct derivation of a Cold Linkedin Invitation I got out of the blue, and hopefully that will spin into a few multimillionaire deals real soon. And no, it is not with the first connector. Thanks to him, I did get a TV interview though.
So Happy to meet Y'all!

Sindrome de las Ranas Hervidas... // Boiled Frog Syndrome...

(English version below)

estimados lectores,

------------------------------------------

My dear readers,

Yesterday a prospected client told me "We can´t innovate, we are holding on the crisis, ´cause, well, we can barely afford the day to day..." I replied: Do you know why Kelloggs, Apple, Microsoft and Google, among others, are the size they are today?? ´cause they know how to take advantage of the moment, instead of seeking shelter.

All of the big ones have taken a few major risks at some point, most at "Death of Victory" levels. But this I mention to you, took advantage of the crisis.

Kellogs took advantage of the great Depression: in the 1930s, Post had virtually the packaged breakfast monopoly and during the Depression, they cut people, marketing budget, and waited to weather the storm. What they never saw coming was Kellogs with their ultrapositive messages that motivated people out of the depresive state, creating a subculture and with an inexpensive product, direct to the consumers´ tables that struggled against poverty, they broke all previous schemes.

Both Apple and Microsoft span out of the petroleum crisis of the 1970s when they pushed personal computers instead of people in the office. Evidently the big winner back then was Microsoft over Xerox, the inventor who did not know how to ride that wave.

Apple and Google take advantage of the dot com crisis of early 2000´, as they hire a ton of exdevelopers of bursted down dot coms, thus creating dream teams. Google´s case is a bit mor complex as it is a dot com, but in simplistic results, it is the same.

Post, Xerox, Yahoo, Walmart and now Microsoft as many have suffered Boiled Frog Syndrome* versus this four I mention... They did not notice the water boiling by their "tiny and unperceivable" competition, and it became a bit too late to act, at least to keep their privileged market share spots...

Today we have several reports which indicate a tsunami of new technologies and vision from the future. One I see as very important was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine by Geoffrey Donovan which states that there is direct and undeniable human Health correlation to forest area shrinkage... (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23332329)

Last Week, Mexico´s Semarnat´s Secretary of State (Environmental Protection Agency) declared in a press conference that 7% of the GNP is lost due to ecological impacts through out the nation, starting with public health.... don´t know about other nations, but that is a lot of resources wasted...

I am just hoping we are still not a bunch of Boiled Frogs... Me, I´m working with a few of my clients and friends in a nice ladder to get out of the pot... Who says ME, and wants to join us??

¿Que tan dificil puede ser?? // How hard can that be??

(English version below)

Yo he trabajado mucho con pesimistas.

--------------------------------------------

How hard can it be??

That is the question every optimist makes and instantaneously every pessimist react in convulsion nervous attack on the floor - my apologies if you are a pessimist, don-t you worry, I'll happily help you up -

I confess: I am an optimistic-realist. Pessimists do not believe in anything about not a thing. nothing about nothing.... To make things worst my natural enthusiasm is easily confused by sheer optimism and stupidity and more over by grey pessimistic minds, scaring them and convulsing them even more ... Anyway,

" Pessimists see a problem in every opportunity. Optimists see an opportunity in every problem" - Winston Churchill

I have worked with more than a fair share of pessimists. In fact, my wife is one, and I still love her. And it is funny how we react so very different to every crisis. For larger the crisis the more I turn to optimism, the more my wife into a pessimism. It is like the forces of the universe would balance each other out. At the end of the day, I keep sanity and faith together, otherwise might as well die.

To be a true realist allows me to see the whole spectrum of steps to get to the target without losing ground. I mean, I know all to well I am not Superman and that I cannot fly over to the next building. I know when I see a 2 yard gap and might as well not jump otherwise I'll end up stuck somewhere undesirably. Mi wife sees nothing but the gigantic hole larger than the Mariana's Trench and in fact has already seen my skull splattered right in the bottom, obviously that is fear speaking.

"To succeed, don´t fight the old, built on the new"- Socrates

This has obviously happened to me in the professional real as well. In EVERY project I have either started, implemented, managed or otherwise I have found multiple objections, there is always the NO guy. In fact that is how I have learned that, as long as the speech is logical and well founded it enriches the project itself; in metaphorical terms, that may be he's got a different measuring scale or a different point of view than mine to gauge the space between buildings, or she's got a sixth sense that she knows it will rain and the roof will be wet that day, making the surface slippery, avoiding my skull to thunder on the bottom of the Grand Canyon dragging everyone else involved.

"Losers are those who are afraid of losing" -  Robert Kiyosaki

Even with more than enough objections I have achieved, maybe rightfully because all the opposition more than satisfactory results. However, most of the times all our health has been compromised, maybe that could have been avoided too, most likely I will never know. What I do know now is how to turn most objections into productive and effective motion, and also preventing oppositors making stupidities. In one case early in my career, a group of skeptical oppositors during an important crisis we went through, stole funds off the project rendering it impossible to operate. Obvious, legal troubles came rolling in over them.

“Humanity certainly needs practical men, who get the most out of their work, and, without forgetting the general good, safeguard their own interests. But humanity also needs dreamers, for whom the disinterested development of an enterprise is so captivating that it becomes impossible for them to devote their care to their own material profit.” - Marie Curie

For the duration of my life, every day, not only my professional years I have turned objections into productive proposals. I have always said that with more points of views the 3D image gets a lot clearer. The point is to grow form each individual point of view and in fact if it is completely contrary it will add more value. The true difficulty lies in listening and growing out from all those, without being discriminatory which is by the way natural and counter-instinctive. doesn't matter where it comes from and that is why almost nobody does it. I shall never destroy or undermine it as nobody knows how important it can be, or not. But no one will know ever if nobody listens.

The point is that in many of my posts and other professionals including Forbes, Harvard, Oxford, MIT, Businessweek and many, many more, we acknowledge that making something new is as unavoidable as necessary and every time it upbrings risks. The point is to minimize those risks by being realists, but if you stay in a pessimistic state of mind, any other optimist will get to the cake before YOU.

So I ask dear readers: Who do you want to team up with??  and How difficult can it be?? Well, there's nothing more dangerous than nothing or even a halfass tryout, Is there??

If you are a pessimist, just 'fess up, help is here.

paradoja de la innovacion y la intuicion vs conocimiento // intuition vs knowledge and the innovation: the paradox

(English version below)

--------------------------------------------------

My dear readers, I regret to inform you that innovation is generalist and 100% counterintuitive.

Here's why:

According to Guillaume Villon, being an expert is an exclusion knowledge process, therefore and automatically excluding all the rest. While it is truly wonderful to be extremely focused in the development of a specific technology, lets say a true scientific breakthrough or spectacular medical advancement, it is also true that most of these specific innovations lack one critical aspect: Reaching its benefactor target, its market.

One oldie but goodie example: Xerox, in 1979 was the #1 office equipment corporation with a very strong specialization in copy machines. They had in their scrap warehouse a personal computer complete with a graphic interface and a mouse. They practically gave that junk away to Steve Jobs because Xerox people did not find a practical use or market. We all know what happened later.

According to Andy Zynga, Fortune 100 innovation consultant, in his Harvard Business review article describes the 'knowledge curse' or cognitive bias.

I have experienced this myself, in a few interviews with PhDs it has been just astonishing that most, not all will not let anyone else speak as if they had all the answers, which by the way is perfectly impossible and oxymoron. Thus for my humble point of view, this people have simply lost their amazement capacity and are self-inflicting barriers to know more because they "know everything"./

In my college years, in final exams and graduation dissertations, I presented a rigid sail sailboat project to the aerodynamics PhD professor. He told me that was simply impossible. I was innocent enough to believe him. To his surprise a few years later, I saw a rigid sail sailboat sailing on the Discovery channel.

In my early corporate years, my ex-boss told me it was impossible for a rookie to know what was going on so he did not accept my process improvement proposal, which by the way of ill-working, ended up costing hundreds of millions of dollars of back orders and repairs to the company. Eventually the implemented solution was my original idea which miraculously found its way onto de CEOs desk...

"Impossible just means it hasn't happened yet"  - Leonardo Da Vinci

"Impossible is just a word in the fools dictionary" - Napoleon Bonaparte

So to innovate one must know, but not too much... nice paradox.

Funny paradox that common sense dictates that to create we need to know more then...This can only be described as counter-intuitive!

Derivative to that and still, the popular phrase says "common sense is the least common of the senses" and if we watch carefully every last human being complain of the lack of common sense of others... Common sense is nothing else than a disposition to think or lack in a certain way we predispose that human collective knowledge will rule the way we all think and act... Yup, 7000000000 humans will act identical one to another just because we assume we all will? ... right, sure... Hence common sense is more utopic than real. It is rather a collective intuition based on ancient simple knowledge and for the same reasons end up in oblivion.

Dun & Bradstreet's, Jeff Stible and OptionEase's Kim Kovaks, they encourage (non-negligent) failure as they believe that that is the best way to learn to innovate. That is a counter-intuitive measure if I've seen one!

According to Andy Zynga that any super-expert can -and must- maintain the capacity, the open mind to keep creating, that is, first know your own knowledge boundaries and admit that there is anyone else will know something different to our stuff. Intuition dictates that if we have the studies and/or knowledge no one else will know more. And so it happens that to find the solution to our problems we need to change our own perception, ergo accept counter-intuition... funny...

"you must learn from everybody" - Alan R Mullaly, Ford CEO

According to Guillaume Villon a very well known colleague in France, the key to innovation, ergo success is in the ability to listen.

According to tons of very specialized studies which I see as confessions, being a specialist one becomes a commodity, versus a generalist that due to the combination of sub-specialties the possibility of finding another person with the same combination is practically zero. Again, a nice little counter-intuitive paradox. At the end of the day the true formula for success is mix and match specialists with generalists listening to each other to get a peripheral holistic view of the problem thus the solution.

"Even if you know you don't know, you don't know what you don't know, that is precisely why you need others" - Mike Brown

In conclusion, to innovate we need to open our minds even if we know everything, because there will be someone else that may not know it all but has the intuition and creativity to find the solution we need.

I do not have all the answers... Nobody has!! but I can help you find them.
