complaints and other annoyances // quejas y otras molestias

(English version below)

"There are only two rules to write:
have something to say, and say it"- Oscar Wilde

¿Idealista? algo. ¿Realista? Totalmente.
-----------------------------------------------------

In this my 70th published post and 11,000nd readership, I share one more of Sunday's Reflections:

Why, as humans, on the one side we complain nobody does nothing, and on the other we don't do it ourselves?
Though true that innovation does not grow on trees nor it will flourish out of a void, according to the biggest experts in history maybe too many rules have been established, out of which I do consider these the 3 main pillars:

"Everything is connected to everything, we just need the skills to find such connections"- Leonardo DaVinci
"More important than intelligence is imagination" _ Albert Einstein
"Creativity is intelligence having fun" - Albert Einstein

Then, Why do we stubbornly demand things from our on self voids, push our brains to fill it with knowledge and at the same time we limit fun and imagination to the minimum?
And on the other end of things, we copy everything, we don't take risks, to explore, we want everything "peeled, mashed and in the mouth"...

Why don't we stop copying, mind our own, do what we have to to better our world and at the same time, make some money. IS that so hard?? I do not think so.

Idealist? somewhat. Realist? Totally.

ROWE vs Free Range chickens? // gallinas sueltas o por resultados?

(English version below)

Estimados lectores,

---------------------------------

Dear readers,

Most of my industrial experience was in ROWEs, by logic these is the most abundant environment, and I'll get to criticize in a minute, but the key aspect is that short term vision makes you focus on the urgent and not on the important, which in turn ends up creating a curved tunnel vision, that is at the end of the day, you end up strangling the log term vision.

I also worked in a small factory that, well, I learned everything you must do to screw things up as a boss and as a company. Among other things, we had no hierarchy, no one was a boss of no one and despite we did have clear tasks, we were 60 people each pulling each owns chariot. But I did learn something good, that you can as a boss demand not over results but on attitude.

" Not too much fire to burn the monk, not to little to not shine on him either" - Spanish Proverb

I learned that people end up reacting very badly on both extremes. In ROWE people burn out their own fuses. In one occasion a coworker dropped dead by a heart attack in his office. I ended three times when younger with severe nervous attacks, one of those with severe chest pains I wish on no one. To both of us we were demanded just too much over our human capacity and ended affecting our health, "our saint was burned down".

There are plenty of studies made by very reputable institutions which connect work environment stress to heart, obesity, diabetes, etc problems. Which in turn not only affects the human capacity but the quality of the work output execution. In my personal case, when I started with my afflictions, I was working myself off 18 hours a day for a long period of time, just to please my bosses. Evidently my own work efficiency came tumbling down, nerves got hold and the best of me and I exploded like a toad on three occasions.

In the free range chicken environment, on the contrary, the stress came out of despite knowing our tasks we had no clear structure to execute, no rulebook or clear and simple procedures to follow, so the machines we produced came out miraculously. I proposed 30 innovation in procedure work rules in my first couple of months on the job, but the owner was preoccupied by his golfing techniques and opening the downtown corporate offices... 6 months after I left, the company shut down their doors for good. Product innovation was their only salvation for 40 years of existence, despite not having any work rules.

When it was my turn to be boss to over 200 people I was very demanding, but never ruthless. If we had to deliver an order to a client, from time to time with the union reps on board we had 24 to 36 hour shifts, but then we rested for 48. The small sacrifice to have a big customer account really happy.

People, please treat people like people to be treated like people. Not quasirobots trying to hatch robots being ...um, people.
Funny how managers that accuse lazy employees is because they are usually too lazy to supervise  and motivate correctly... keyword> correctly. I never drove someone to a nervous breakdown unless they deserved that out of personal negligence and for the greater good. The key is to know each individual real good to know if its negligence or capacity. This was one innovation I brought and implemented in HR. For 8 years as a boss it worked wonders, and with this I was able to launch 50 new products to market, that is, I created our own Innovation Culture.

To exploit people in order to satisfy the ROWE objectives has its advantages, of course, but as everything, it has a cost. For the greater pressure on people the bigger it will be the cost on the long term.

We must be able to innovate the processes, procedures and human resources in order to insure the company's long term survival. The ROWE System usually condemns much less facilitates the Innovation Culture which is vital for the company's survival. Google is the master in balancing both simultaneously. I did it, at my own scale of course, but before I knew Google even existed.

Mexico es pais innovador?? // Is Mexico that innovative??

(English version below)

----------------

Mexico, lets face it, is world renouned by a bunch of good, kind and nice things, so lets stick to that: tequila, mariachis, tacos, green taxicabs (no longer, but whatever), Most stunning beaches, beautiful, kind, ingenious, hiper friendly people, awesome weather, but... INNOVATIVE???

According tho the very presigious firm, Nielsen Consulting,... yes... Who would{ve said...

It just so happens that for the year 2012, traditionally innovative countries dropped new product development from 75% to 69%. Astonishingly, Mexico is now considered one fo the top ten, alongside China, India and Brasil as emerging market rankings, not too much of a surprise there.

23% of inhabitants in the traditionally innovative countries say that they truly desire new, vanguardist products, when 63% of Mexicos population desires innovation... however, we cannot find them on the streets!! People is hungry for new stuff, and manufacturers still believe that the same old crap will do it as it has done pretty ok for 30 years, Come on, Iti is no official, the public will not swallow all that old crap anymore!!!

Truth is, top tripple A global corporations have set up their innovation, R&D centres in Mexico in the last couple of years, which speaks for the intellectual, ingenious people´s capital, for of which I am (mostly) proud to be a part of that movement, helping companies & entrepreneurs Become innovative, and of course serve as an international bridge.

infectar, mutar, o morir // infect, mutate or die.

(english version below)

Dear readers, after a brief family crisis and a heavy project overload, I'm back form my brief absence.

I wanted to type a bit about eco-innovation ad a small reflection... This is clearly a overexploited subject in most contexts and media... I do get tired too, because truth is we get an overbearing, gut wrenching guilt and impotence feelings, sometimes over to absurd levels, that is, to the ones that care about the health of out children and other descendants. Another truth is that daily routine and human ecosystem is built in such a way that we forget there is a world within our tiny planet, but out there beyond the city walls which in truth is very sick. Dr. M.L.King and Einstein used to say in a very similar way: "Hell is filled with people who noticed something was wrong and did nothing to remedy it."

Also true is that most environmentalist information is loaded with sensationalism and evidently it is made that way to create a conscience , but some do over do it. Even come to the absurd to print paper with: "save some trees, don´t use paper.."

A true pillar is that all human activity causes effects, and by the way society is built, most are inescapable. Lets say we got to a mountain somewhere as a hermit, - that is if we can find a ´virgin´ patch of land owned by no one, or we could afford it ourselves, so good luck with that - anyway, it just so happens that anything we do will harm in some way that tiny environment. We come into the "existence and observation paradox." According to the quantum physics observation law, the observed particle will change its behavior just for the reason of being watched. Extrapolating that to the human existence, the habitat will change its behavior and evidently the other way around too.

Now, in this last example, we find a patch of Forrest  jungle, whatever you please with a cave, water stream, etc... We limit our fire use, we eat whatever its there, etc. What would make this micro-environment sustainable? By principle our existence will be noticed, but the damage should be the least permanent possible. That is "the environment will change its behavior" will kick in it will compensate our breaths CO2 by the foliage, the seed in our food will bloom again, the broken branches for our fire will sprout, the ashes are fertilizing, etc. So the microecosystem will promptly autoregenerate.

The problem is we are 7,000,000,000 humans on Earth, consuming resources as if there was no tomorrow. According to some statistics we have around 50 years or so natural resources worth for not only human, but planetary subsistence. I do not know that, so I will not judge.

Humans have been around for roughly 20,000years. versus 13.5trillion whatever years of life existence on the planet, and considering 99% was extinct well beyond 20,000years before, well ,that was not human´s fault, but too many is.

The sun has, I believe 1,2, 5, 12, 80, 150, 500, 1000 y 5000 year cycles. Evidently all scientific records go back 150 years only. PRevious to that is basically paleontology or whatever kind of studies. It just so happens that about 500 years ago was the hottest few years of human history. Of course that GHGs and global warming is a fact, and I guess that if 500 years ago the planet had the same GHG levels as we do today, most land animals would be extinct by drowning today was we know them. I do not know back when, Jurassic or whatever, GHG levels were a lot higher than today, but that was clearly before the Ice Ages. That would have been some toasty dinosaur or whomever summers.

Also true that this are by no way of reason to continue doing stupid damage as we all do everyday.

We as humans cannot turn back the clock, but starting at where we are at, we have plenty to do in our own tiny little corner of our world, every day.

In a pretty lousy movie I saw many years ago, the only respectable part of the movie was its opening phrase, and it was the definition of virus: "biological entity who invades the hosts body, and with total disregard if the host dies, it consumes every available resource the host has unlit either the host dies or mutates. And the virus has 3 options: mutates, dies or changes hosts".

Our host is our planet. No way of escaping that. And true, our Earth has its own mutating mechanisms: Ice Ages, jelly fish overpopulation, superhuracanes, etc. But apparently humans are quicker in doing stupidities.

Assuming we do not have another host to go to as technology is still too far away to do so, we have the other 2 options: either we mutate or die.

What we can do is we can mutate our conscience, innovate within for the greater good. OH, and by the way, lets do business, which is apparently what my treehugger friends tend to forget and capitalists tend to dismiss. That is both save the planet and do business is not only possible but a must.

Um, that is why I skipped way too many days to blog out.

¿Que tan dificil puede ser?? // How hard can that be??

(English version below)

Yo he trabajado mucho con pesimistas.

--------------------------------------------

How hard can it be??

That is the question every optimist makes and instantaneously every pessimist react in convulsion nervous attack on the floor - my apologies if you are a pessimist, don-t you worry, I'll happily help you up -

I confess: I am an optimistic-realist. Pessimists do not believe in anything about not a thing. nothing about nothing.... To make things worst my natural enthusiasm is easily confused by sheer optimism and stupidity and more over by grey pessimistic minds, scaring them and convulsing them even more ... Anyway,

" Pessimists see a problem in every opportunity. Optimists see an opportunity in every problem" - Winston Churchill

I have worked with more than a fair share of pessimists. In fact, my wife is one, and I still love her. And it is funny how we react so very different to every crisis. For larger the crisis the more I turn to optimism, the more my wife into a pessimism. It is like the forces of the universe would balance each other out. At the end of the day, I keep sanity and faith together, otherwise might as well die.

To be a true realist allows me to see the whole spectrum of steps to get to the target without losing ground. I mean, I know all to well I am not Superman and that I cannot fly over to the next building. I know when I see a 2 yard gap and might as well not jump otherwise I'll end up stuck somewhere undesirably. Mi wife sees nothing but the gigantic hole larger than the Mariana's Trench and in fact has already seen my skull splattered right in the bottom, obviously that is fear speaking.

"To succeed, don´t fight the old, built on the new"- Socrates

This has obviously happened to me in the professional real as well. In EVERY project I have either started, implemented, managed or otherwise I have found multiple objections, there is always the NO guy. In fact that is how I have learned that, as long as the speech is logical and well founded it enriches the project itself; in metaphorical terms, that may be he's got a different measuring scale or a different point of view than mine to gauge the space between buildings, or she's got a sixth sense that she knows it will rain and the roof will be wet that day, making the surface slippery, avoiding my skull to thunder on the bottom of the Grand Canyon dragging everyone else involved.

"Losers are those who are afraid of losing" -  Robert Kiyosaki

Even with more than enough objections I have achieved, maybe rightfully because all the opposition more than satisfactory results. However, most of the times all our health has been compromised, maybe that could have been avoided too, most likely I will never know. What I do know now is how to turn most objections into productive and effective motion, and also preventing oppositors making stupidities. In one case early in my career, a group of skeptical oppositors during an important crisis we went through, stole funds off the project rendering it impossible to operate. Obvious, legal troubles came rolling in over them.

“Humanity certainly needs practical men, who get the most out of their work, and, without forgetting the general good, safeguard their own interests. But humanity also needs dreamers, for whom the disinterested development of an enterprise is so captivating that it becomes impossible for them to devote their care to their own material profit.” - Marie Curie

For the duration of my life, every day, not only my professional years I have turned objections into productive proposals. I have always said that with more points of views the 3D image gets a lot clearer. The point is to grow form each individual point of view and in fact if it is completely contrary it will add more value. The true difficulty lies in listening and growing out from all those, without being discriminatory which is by the way natural and counter-instinctive. doesn't matter where it comes from and that is why almost nobody does it. I shall never destroy or undermine it as nobody knows how important it can be, or not. But no one will know ever if nobody listens.

The point is that in many of my posts and other professionals including Forbes, Harvard, Oxford, MIT, Businessweek and many, many more, we acknowledge that making something new is as unavoidable as necessary and every time it upbrings risks. The point is to minimize those risks by being realists, but if you stay in a pessimistic state of mind, any other optimist will get to the cake before YOU.

So I ask dear readers: Who do you want to team up with??  and How difficult can it be?? Well, there's nothing more dangerous than nothing or even a halfass tryout, Is there??

If you are a pessimist, just 'fess up, help is here.

Que me enseñaron los mejores coaches de la historia / What did the best coaches in history taught me

  • John Wooden (Basketball)
  • Dean Smith (Basketball)
  • Bear Bryant (Football)
  • Red Auerbach (Basketball)
  • Scotty Bowman (Hockey)
  • Mike Krzyzewski (Basketball)
  • Phil Jackson (Basketball)
  • Dan Gable (Wrestling)
  • Vince Lombardi (Football)

Quieres llegar lejos y bien, vamos acompañados" - proverbio africano

    Todo depende de la perspectiva
    It's all matter of perspective

     insano y te prometo
     algo maravilloso saldra de ello"

  • John Wooden (College Basketball)
  • Dean Smith (College Basketball)
  • Bear Bryant (Professional Football)
  • Vince Lombardi (Professional Football)
  • Red Auerbach (Professional Basketball)
  • Scotty Bowman (Professional Hockey)
  • Mike Krzyzewski (College Basketball)
  • Phil Jackson (Professional Basketball)
  • Dan Gable (College Wrestling)

  • These are some of the best coaches in american sport history. As any good coach knows enough as to how to play the game. But most of all have the vision skill. To observe the opponent and their weaknesses, to observe the field and catch its defects; to observe ones players and know their pros and weaknesses.

The last one, Vince Lombardi - I talk a bit about him because I am a Football fan- was one of the most victorious coaches in the history of the game. He created the NFL.

But how funny it is that None of this awesome coaches scored a point on the field. EVER.

This is comparable to what we consultants do. We are not going to compete or race who is better me or you -my client- in your expertise. I do not need to know how to cook to know that you have a failing restaurant because of lousy service (please check my older post regarding a restaurant case) . Or any other industry for that matter. Examples are plenty in my other posts.

It is being a strategist to take advantage of what YOU have with what I have, having a broader perspective and a fresher sight.  As they say:

"Two heads think better than one, four eyes see better than two, and four hands do better than two"

TV killed the radio star, or the internet or... Who? / ¿Que el internet mato a quien??

    (english version below)
     7 tendrían computadora, 93, NO

No sirve, nunca sirvió...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TV killed the radio star, or the internet or... Who?

The internet, Oh thing of wonder. It's reach and potential... True, but because of a few we are made to believe that is the snakeoil kill-all solve-all, reality is that it´s not as much as we are told, and with such too many voices at once it becomes noise, Doesn't it? We are 7,000,000,000 humans alive today, plus that one born now... another, ... and another...

What most people do not acknowledge is that Most humans do NOT have internet access. According tho the IWS for 2012, 34% of humanity has internet access. The biggest culprits are: NorthAmerica with 78% Oceania 67%, Europe 63%, Latinamerica 42%, Asia & Middle east 41% and Africa only 15% of its population has access. However, 44% of the cibernauts are asian with over a billion users, 500M in Europe and another bunch in America. Internet  has grown in 12 years by 544%, Africa 3600% in the same period.

Still a long long long way to go before all of humanity has access, and still we hear everywhere that "The internet is murdering paper" ... right, but up to a very relative point.  Lets review the facts:

Only 3% of all books published in human history have been digitized. Increasing  fast , but by some estimates humanity will still be at that for another 200 years... I'll give you a hard discount of 100 years.
Only in the US 25% of the book industry sales are eBooks. In Europe is 2%, and LatinAmerica must be around 1%. True that the editorial industry has lost, starting with their credibility, but still crumbs. Crumbs that amass 1 million titles in the US last year alone in indie format. They will not go without a fight, and still a long way, but they are indeed feeling footsteps on the roof. Nowadays its just amazing that we do not depend on an antiquated burocrat who chose from his extra-subjective criteria if something was going to sell or not, Now its up to the public who decides with their own taste and money.... Music industry, somewhere like that.

Newspapers, this one didn't even feel the footsteps. The internet does have them on their knees, that is, in some developed niches. In the US their sales have plummeted down to the 1950s numbers and still falling fast. True that still on their knees they may be fighting back, but fleeing investors just out of panic or in search of who knows what are their own worst enemies.True that some exporting their business model to the internet will survive, but I don't know if that will work, at least not to all of them, many are still going to fall. News must be of extreme high quality and not available for free anywhere may have a chance to survive in the membership model... Advertising sales depend on traffic so it will be extremely difficult to keep old business models just like so, so it is close to impossible. Arrogance will make that impossible. Some lower income niches and markets they may still have some hope. Completely die off? Nah, I don't think so. But their glory days have gone never to return. Every person with a digital camera and even with a lame verbal skill is a journalist now...

Magazines for what I can see at a distance they are stuck in the middle of books and newspapers. Their only hope is to go into a hybrid business model and with a very high quality content. Those saturated with 2 articles and 200 ads are undoubtedly dead, and unfortunately most are like that. We still have waiting rooms, Don't we?

Yellow Pages or whatever Phone directories... D E A D... In my past life as an industrial my boss paid well over 250K usd for ads in those books. In their height, Mexico City books were  2 at about 4 inches thick, each about 8 years ago. 5 years ago I was in charge of killing those ads. 4, 3 and 2 years ago they called and pleaded for our return with a halfass discount lure... Today, The book (no longer 2) its about 2 inches thick. Those guys abused and now they are paying the consequences. Disappear  maybe not, but boy do they deserve to.

In some countries, not all, Direct Mailing is an advertising method. DEAD. Experts speculate that a good DM campaign is when 0.5% is catched. How wasteful can you get? it is like throwing an annoying nuclear bomb into the ocean killing everyones attention to grab a couple of shrimp... Most unethical and antiecological... dead at 99%

Telemarketers: Please, oh please die!! I mean, the telemarketing industry... Poor zombies that they don't even dial the phone only to be hung up and cursed on not even half way into the first scripted phrase, screened by caller ID, recorders, etc... Doesn't work, never has, never will. Not related to paper, but still.

Television, will not die for it has adapted pretty Ok, but can do a better job at it. Some TV Stations Abuse severely on the amount of Ads they broadcast...  I know a case, a newscast in Mexico City that its live for 3 hours... without fear of exaggeration more than half of the broadcast are ads over news... And if we leave valuable content, I could cut it down to 4 minutes even with the well scripted editorials...

In my past life, I was immersed in the advertising specialty and promotional item industry for 8 years covering a good part of our continent. When your become aware of this industry it is just amazing the cacophony we all live in. Experts speculate we all receive between 3 to 4000 ads a day... I dare you dear readers to remember 5... All aspects of the advertising industry will have to remodel, innovate on itself if it wants to survive. My apologies marketeers: It is not only about the message it is about the content. So please stop YELLING and start listening...

Don´t get me wrong, I LOVE what the Internet IS, not the myths and buzz sme have made us believe!
Funny thing we humans are... Will it be like the theaters were going to be killed by the movies, the movies by the TV, radio by TV, trains by automobiles, highways by planes, ships by planes, LPs were going to be killed by the 8track... right, but by the CDs... Well, the LPs have come back from the dead in some musiclover circles and plenty of DJs... so dead, what you call dead, they 'aint. ... and all of this dead by the internet.... don't think so... So:

Stop whining and Adapt yourselves!!! because what is true, who doesn't adapt truly does die...

Close but not really for the passenger trains and the sail boats who should make some kind of comeback simply for ecological reasons...  Horses, as much as I love them, sorry, but maybe not..

Que pasa con los autos electricos? // Why haven't the electric cars thrived?

    (english version below)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an answer to a question posted on a Linkedin Production Development forum. Which by the way was "edited" out... conspiracy?... don't know, don't care.

As a strategic and innovation consultant most times I have to take an unexpected position, everytime it is to think outside the box, even if it is in opposition. As an innovationer it is my job to try and think everything, even difficulties and possible problems.

    Why haven't electric cars thrived?

There is a conspirationist theory that says that oil companies snuffed the electric vehicle technology which in fact was born before gasoline technology. It is a fact that oil moves even wars into the destruction and thriving of nations. Why not simple inventions and inventors? All it takes is a smear campaign... I truly don´t know.

Some get stuck in the shallow concept of cost. Of course cost is a ratio of volume sales, and if sales are not going up, costs will stay up. Though batery production costs are up in the sky still, most car producers are still wondering why volume hasn´t gone up yet.

    This is my take:

I do believe that battery for that purpose are still in diapers, though giant leaps have been taken recently but not quite there yet, and here's why: charge and life time. When electric cars reach human and/or gasoline threshold, that will be a game changer. What I mean is, when a 100% electric car reaches 1000miles (or 12hours top speed with minimum time or NONE recharging necessary). That is what a normal human roadtrip threshold is, then the 100%electric vehicles may thrive.

And of course, how many total miles/recharges will a single battery set will work at 100% before we need to exchange them for a new set. How will we as users know: "my batteries will last for this next 800trip..." if the batteries are not new, the charge life is not 100%, so that will simply not going to happen, and we as users will be left stranded before arrival. We can walk with a can of gasoline, we can't walk with a set of batteries to exchange on the side of any road... Exchange Battery stations is a mildly good idea, but How will I know that the set is good to go? How will I know that every station has the set I need how I need it? How will I cross the border to go into a multinational trip? So 100% reliability has still a long, long way to go.

Now, ecosystemically, as almost nobody thinks: 100% electric cars are charged "magically" by electric power plants, which in turn in most countries are powered by oil or nuclear, and it is a fact that most oil produced is used in electricity production. Now, the energetical efficiency of the whole system is extremely low, even compared to a direct gasoline vehicle. The logistics behind the batteries is a nightmare, using plenty of oil in trips around the world to simply produce the batteries, obviously juicing up the costs, God knows what kind of pollution happens while producing, and the recycling/treatment of the batteries is also still a nightmare as pretty exotic materials are in fact being used
And one true fact that few people know is that power lines are one of the biggest culprits of global warming due to the magnetic fields generated by the same transmission, so tit for tat...

After this obcure pessimistic view of sorts, It is a fact that we must do things to better our environment, I am working on a few things myself today, and vehicles are one that we all FEEL as a whole society we can do something about it with that, and yes that might work... I myself could think and wished I could buy an electric car but I can't have two cars: one for road trips and the other for city, as some of my trips are spur of the moment; or I can't add solar cells on my condo building... I can't think of replacing power lines nor that every power station will be solar powered... and with bateries...

What can we do? Keep thinking. and come up with a better thorough solution.

    My 3 cents
