Sindrome de las Ranas Hervidas... // Boiled Frog Syndrome...

(English version below)

estimados lectores,

------------------------------------------

My dear readers,

Yesterday a prospected client told me "We can´t innovate, we are holding on the crisis, ´cause, well, we can barely afford the day to day..." I replied: Do you know why Kelloggs, Apple, Microsoft and Google, among others, are the size they are today?? ´cause they know how to take advantage of the moment, instead of seeking shelter.

All of the big ones have taken a few major risks at some point, most at "Death of Victory" levels. But this I mention to you, took advantage of the crisis.

Kellogs took advantage of the great Depression: in the 1930s, Post had virtually the packaged breakfast monopoly and during the Depression, they cut people, marketing budget, and waited to weather the storm. What they never saw coming was Kellogs with their ultrapositive messages that motivated people out of the depresive state, creating a subculture and with an inexpensive product, direct to the consumers´ tables that struggled against poverty, they broke all previous schemes.

Both Apple and Microsoft span out of the petroleum crisis of the 1970s when they pushed personal computers instead of people in the office. Evidently the big winner back then was Microsoft over Xerox, the inventor who did not know how to ride that wave.

Apple and Google take advantage of the dot com crisis of early 2000´, as they hire a ton of exdevelopers of bursted down dot coms, thus creating dream teams. Google´s case is a bit mor complex as it is a dot com, but in simplistic results, it is the same.

Post, Xerox, Yahoo, Walmart and now Microsoft as many have suffered Boiled Frog Syndrome* versus this four I mention... They did not notice the water boiling by their "tiny and unperceivable" competition, and it became a bit too late to act, at least to keep their privileged market share spots...

Today we have several reports which indicate a tsunami of new technologies and vision from the future. One I see as very important was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine by Geoffrey Donovan which states that there is direct and undeniable human Health correlation to forest area shrinkage... (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23332329)

Last Week, Mexico´s Semarnat´s Secretary of State (Environmental Protection Agency) declared in a press conference that 7% of the GNP is lost due to ecological impacts through out the nation, starting with public health.... don´t know about other nations, but that is a lot of resources wasted...

I am just hoping we are still not a bunch of Boiled Frogs... Me, I´m working with a few of my clients and friends in a nice ladder to get out of the pot... Who says ME, and wants to join us??

Why aren't we kind and grateful? // Porque somos tan malagradecidos??

(English version below)

In this, my #50 blogpost I have an insight: The art of kindness and cordiality is lost.

A wise man once said "being kind means you are brave" . Way too often when I give thanks or offer my helping to someone, they look at me with a "What's wrong" As if I'd smooched them with a french kiss or something...
-Not that planting a good french kiss to someone you really like is bad, the slap in the face that usually follows is, I mean, my wife's ... Anyway, current social 'norms'withstanding and my jaw is sadly intact -

The point is, Why aren't we all more kind to people deserving kindness and thankfulness???
Or help people that need our help??

According to a Harvard study of well over 3000 businesses, around 70% of employees feel unappreciated and unmotivated; 80% of reasons for quitting are because people feel unappreciated!!

A boss I had said to me on my first day on the job: "Iif you do it well it's your job, you do it bad it's your problem".. What kind of guide and motivation is that!?! Truth is, I never knew what was rightfully, mediocre or badly done because I never received any kind of praise, thus orientation, just because of my boss' ludicrous and absurd fears!!

Of course by now some of you my kind readers are thinking "I do it like that because if I praise someone they will not work as hard..."  I'm sorry, THAT is fear. What causes people to Stop working is no feeling motivated enough. And a business like the one I had that boss, it's truly a FEAR culture business, and here's why:

I did my job half way because of fear. I did not excel, out of fear of missing the mark. I did because of fear of being fired. I stopped myself of doing good things, out of fear. And we were over 4000 employees that we did what we did, everything half way, out of fear.

When I left, exhausted by the way, I could see. It was a MEDIOCRE culture created that way because of fear of being grateful... What a shame.

"Never confuse my kindness for weakness, my silence for ignorance, or my calmness for acceptance" - Samurai Proverb

In contrast, when I had employees of my own, It was very difficult for me to break the cultural paradigms and habits of ruling by fear. I am also saying that if something is WRONG, you must act accordingly. I fired tons of people that misinterpreted my kindness. It was people that was eventually going to explode. It was people that did NOT deserve a healthy working environment, anyway.

But if there is something RIGHT we must praise. It is horribly noticeable that most people all around the world is famished for being appreciated. So much so, that people who is appreciative are stared at as aliens from another galaxy. Truth is we do not know how to behave when someone is, which is weird, which it shouldn't be... Truth is also, to receive one must know how to give to... to the deserving.

Ok, not a french kiss, not every time, but at least a palm in the back, a smile and an :"awesome, well done, keep improving" This by the way its the key. This way I accomplished many miracles.

That is: It is good business to be kind and thankful.

"Happiness is achieved by being thankful, not the other way around, and never by being unkind" - Buddha

We all deserve to be happy

What to do for global warming?

Everyone talks about world temperatures records that just date back 100 years. Has anyone thought about "unofficial" records dating behind 100 years? Of course not because it is unpolitical and far from scandalous news worthy... According to historical records as I read a while ago a doctoral study that before the thermometer was invented, the hottest years in human history were around the 1400s when Europe's crops flourished as summers were longer, helping the Europeans come out of the Dark-ages, just because they ate better, their brains became better. There are  5 sun-earth cycles that are also influencing the earths temperature and we as humans cannot do anything about that.

Of course that kind of information does not come out as noisy as the cataclysmic, catastrophic end of the world news we hear everyday. We all love a good catastrophe movie from time to time but not all the time.

There will always be blind denialist people, conspirationists, short and trimmed focus people, and most dangerous: stupid people that exaggerate everything to one side or the other according to their own self interests, including just fame by creating "news".

Albeit that, it is a fact that pollution is a humongous problem that we as a generation must start dealing with our grandfathers doing, so we may try and leave our grandsons a better world than the one we found, not a worst one as our current trend is clearly going into worse.

Have any of you thought that deforestation, overfishing and high-voltage transmission lines are the largest by far, contributors to global warming? not just CO2, and vehicle emissions in reality is a "small" fraction, but it is something we all feel we can do... there is so much more we can, but won't.

Einstein once said:"the ones that have the privilege of knowing, have the duty to act accordingly" so lets all stop complaining and act.

Please check out my previous post relating directly on the articles subject. And yes, I am doing my part as well as I can, and I'll be better at it tomorrow as I am working on that everyday.

Would HR hire by today's standards either Lincoln or Churchill?

My dear readers,
Due to popular demand, I have translated my own blog post into English. Please feel free to share.
Just imagine what might have been the world if Abraham Lincoln or Winston Churchill had not reached their Presidencies? What might have been the world without the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney or Oprah Winfrey? What have all these historical characters in common?
Steve Jobs was exiled from his own company for “lack of leadership and vision …”
The Beatles, as well as Elvis Presley were ignored for years by the major record labels saying they were “a bunch of crazy rhythmless boys without any musical sense, zero chance of success …”
Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper “for lack of creativity …” and in their first incursions in order to raise funds to create the “amusement park”, was crossed out as “deluded”…
Oprah Winfrey, as far as I know is the richest women of the world that left the poorest district of Chicago, once was dismissed off the local newscast since she had “no television presence …”
Sir Richard Branson is the owner of one of the few airlines (one of 2 in the US) without losses, owner of the only private space agency of the world … Know that he had to leave school by dyslexia and learning problems!
Lincoln, a mostly self-taught lawyer, virtually without prior experience of public positions, becomes president of the United States almost by a miracle, abolishes slavery with no precedents, in a country divided … Today, with all the statistical methods, background, political means, etc. … any of you think that he would have come to the presidency? AND stating that it is not due to a lack of merit or talent…
By the standards of Human Resources Departments today, Lincoln would be 100% unhireable: self-taught, zero credentials, fewer certificates, almost zero political experience and much less prior military background…
Churchill on the other hand, military first, then a journalist and then many political posts, many of these serious problems, practically never managed to be re-elected, bounding from stall to stall and wrapped up in scandals, the largest being the massacre of Gallipoli in the first world war, the scandalous opposition against Gandhi and the independence of India and the support in favor of the abdication of King Edward VIII caused serious discontent and “exile” of the parliament.
By the standards of Human Resources Departments today, Churchill would be 100% unhireable pretty much for anything, much less as prime minister of all positions … hoping  never holding onto anything, noisy, contrarian, with all his prior history somewhat questionable …
Personally I thank you, thank you to all the opponents of all the great minds and personalities, because without all of you, great minds would have never found their own sense of persistence, had they not found their way, their destination to finally change the course of mankind … All the great innovations are born of the opposition, so thank you.
It is my observation that the great common factor of all the visionaries is that are terrible opposition of minds beached in the comfort zone, or founded in inertia. fears, panics, terrors, pride, and of course with a strong chance that they are almost all of human resources or recruitment areas …
In my personal experience, in my small corner of the world I have achieved and broken paradigms, displayed the talent behind the credentials and experience and got to hire those who turned out to be, in their great majority great people. Many a times without the specific experience but with great and more than enough desire, vision and talent … just what Lincoln, Churchill and all the fore mentioned did have.
So it’s not important previous experience or credentials or certificates? I am not stupid, of course these are important, but it is far from everything. Is talent measurable? If you are clear, yes it's measurable. The zeal or the desire? Certainly! But, still not by machines! RH complains that does not have the time, and that it is more efficient to machines to select the candidates only on the basis of their credentials and experience … efficient? Yes, of course.
On the other hand, there are studies of Stanford, Oxford and Harvard where they say that 80% of the time of the departments of human resources is wasted by correcting their own errors of recruitment … 80% According to Alan Weiss, a highly respected colleague said that, he would disappear all HR departments off the planet … I have not reached these radical ends with my clients, yet... But why does nobody else do anything about??? If you are still questioning if what I say may be exaggerated, just check Harvard's post here: http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2013/02/your_job_ads_are_driving_talen.html
Answer as to why HR has allowed their own system to get broken: Fear & power. most destructive of combinations.

“Idiot is the one who repeats actions expecting different results” – Albert Einstein

And you may be wondering dear reader, what does all this have to do with innovation? Well, the innovation lies in doing new things, or old things in a different manner, and it is my belief that it is time, well overdue, there is an urgent need to make sweeping changes to the system, go, if you want to recruit and retain the best talent, that today, they are going between the fingers and neither account have been given … so seen too few in HR even strive to find it and accept that the system is broken…. I know.
Corollary to my original post: Why if we are certain that HR Would never hire the best minds on the planet, game changers, breakthrough talent, as I've shown before, Why do we have them choosing and hiring for our own companies?

Is this problem fixable? yes. Call me and we'll discuss.
just a though...

A mi??!"

5- Persistencia.

What does a tiny restaurant and BestBuy have in common??

(english version below)

I´m totally bilingual, so please don´t hesitate to ask in english either!

(this is one of my first posts, but due to popular demand I am translating this one today)

A few weeks ago a good friend of mine invited me for breakfast to a cozy corner restaurant, in a very Parisian part of town filled with cozy cafes and first class restaurants. When I arrived I couldn't help notice the prime location and with hundreds of options around to chose from, most of the others with a few more patrons even at off hours as it was.

I see the menu and I think: "Whoa, I truly hope the juice glass is a large and fresh one!" Same tone goes around the whole menu. I order a single cup of coffee while I wait for my friend. Nice tasting and tiny coffee, and I can't help but think it is well over twice the cost as at Starbucks and well over triple as any other free refill coffee shop. All around expensive, I am hopeful it will be worth  the cost.

My friend arrives with his partner. Wonderful lady. We order a couple of omelets, they order two glasses of juice, one orange one grapefruit, two espressos one double one single and both with a cloud of milk. 30 maybe 40 minutes go by. Two tiny, lab sampler looking, defrosting glasses arrive that clearly were taken out of the fridge and both orange. Two tiny cups of black coffee. Remember, that was not the order. And finally the omelets, lovely designed plates as the ones we see on TV, nice size accompanied by a slice of tomato and a far-too-burned toasted bread piece. The omelet was cold. We ask for them to be reheated. Well over 5 minutes go by, closer to ten and they come back with a rubbery slice of over toasted bread, a sucked up dried slice of tomato... and the omelet was still cold.

I do not know what they tired to pull but most likely they were prep'd maybe 4, 12 hours before and taken out of the fridge and most likely slipped into the microwave... truth is I do not know, but that is what happened. Nor the designer plate nor the perfect omelet fold could save that meal.

My friend goes find the owner and by the looks of it they knew each other from before. He tells the tale with reasonably kind words of what happened. The owner comes by our table and apologizes. I tell him: "thanks for the apology but that serves no one, it is clear that you have a far bigger and deeper problem than just cold omelets." I tell him about what I do for a living which encompasses business rescue and his answer was obviously brushed off as: "Yeah right..."

Up to scale it is the same thing that is going on with Best Buy over in the USA. Nobody gives a damn. Their business is worthless, enough that they are strangling the golden egg goose, taking out every penny out of their customers that we can't but feel betrayed and defrauded by our service providers. And above that I offer my professional helping hand to Rescue His business, his heritage and all I get is a cold omelet... I mean, not even a "thank you for your concern.."

In conclusion my dear readers, both this small restaurant and the giant Best Buy among other issues but both arise from the same sin, is they are arrogant. Trying to save a few cents here and there, they are losing big money hiring third grade employees and try and appear as first class, losing customers in the process. There are places for every level and class and it is wonderful that we have them, but those places do not charge first class tickets nor they pretend to be first class by any means.

Either you charge first class with first class service and product or you are a fraud.

We the public are not stupid, and most consumers will not complain, we simply will never go back, and now with the social networks, there's no place to hide. And out of respect for my friend I will not publicize the name of the place. I'll leave that to my colleagues the food critics.

Point is: " How many psychologists do you need to change a lightbulb? Doesn't matter how many, what matters is that the bulb wants to change"

If Best Buy falls with billions of dollars in assets and revenues sales, What kind of destiny does the tiny restaurant hold, even if it manages to stay afloat with 'tourist trap' type sales? I omen it will not last a year, because to do what has to be done first he has to fix himself, and that is far form easy and alone, most likely he wont be able to.
