Linkedin, So What´ up? // ¿Que se y te trae Linkedin?

(English version below)

---------------
When I started using Linkedin, it was a bit late. I just lost my job without a penny on me and was obviously against the clock. I started reaching out to as many recruiters, HR and headhunters as the system allowed me to, as I couldn't grasp the ones I wanted to as most were 3rd or 5th degrees away. So my strategy was to accept and send as many invitations as possible to, you know, meet people I couldn't actually meet in person. I do believe that HR & HH peoples' jobs IS to meet people to recruit the best possible and if that connection is not the best, perhaps I do know their best fit for You, you know, quid-pro-quo. I was amazed as to how many did not accept my invitation and actually got into trouble with Linkedin's controversial rules.
Back to the point. If Linkedin system allowed me to reach out and connect to anyone I wished to create a relationship, I wouldn't have had to make such acrobatics to accomplish so. The principle of a virtual social network basic premise is, or at least it should be, to meet people you don't know... If I do know you, then Why in the world would I need Linkedin for? There is a bunch of abusive people in every social network, true, but that shouldn't deter honest people to do what the tool is designed to do: Meet people. Ignoring and Blocking tools are meant against abusive people, once they've proven they are abusive. How can you tell one is, if you've never been connected?
Twitter just as well, they have their antispammer fear up to Wazoo that I am absolutely certain their algorithms are all upside-down, but what do I know.
Anyway, Over the first few months I logged into the jobs forums, pretty much none had a "you have X connections to the job poster". Now I do have at least one second degree connection to most job postings, and the ratio of answered and invitation to a meeting or interview did increase dramatically, even though most connections that accepted me and I have never met. I realized that there is enough people happy to help YOU as most accept, or at least should accept the fact that YOU NEVER KNOW WHO WILL YOU NEED TOMORROW, There is a proverb that goes: "There is always a reason you'll meet people, either they will add something to your life, or you are going to do so to theirs". So I say, might as well start connecting Today.
And yes, most of business I have today is in direct derivation of a Cold Linkedin Invitation I got out of the blue, and hopefully that will spin into a few multimillionaire deals real soon. And no, it is not with the first connector. Thanks to him, I did get a TV interview though.
So Happy to meet Y'all!

Pirateria y yo. // Piracy and me.

(english version below)

"To risk is to lose a bit, Don´t risk to lose everything"

20 some years ago I designed a connection to record audio without noise from the radio, and I had a few dozen cassette tapes recorded this way. Now I have shazamed a few and bought the CD. Still have a few unrecognized though. Same with VHS.

What has changed from the radio recorded tape to youtube or any other similar channel? broadcast. Why not use that to the artists advantage?

When I've liked something enough that I listen to on the radio, youtube or wherever I turn around and buy it, each time for a different reason, and I'm not the only one. I support the artist, the industry, quality, live or big screen experience...
I've never paid for illegal media, and never will. and I am aware I'm not the only one.

Piracy exists because mainly two factors, one is monetary: it is way too far cheaper to buy illegal than to buy legal. Second, cultural. Some countries has piracy ingrained too deep into their social culture that it would take an enormous effort and resources to change that, thus creating a paradox: having to charge more on the products to pay for the antipiracy campaigns, making piracy even stronger and making their case on the way. Pirates do not care much for laws and whenever a pirate channel is blocked, 10 more are created in an endless battle cycle.

Why not use "nonprofit piracy" as a free promotion agency of sorts?

Warner guys, kudos, for once a media giant has realized the old sayings: "adapt or die", "If you can't beat them, join them". and "new world, new game rules".

Charge less per item to win more on volume, I say. That is the way I see to not only control but take advantage with them, as piracy can and never will be eradicated.

Que me enseñaron los mejores coaches de la historia / What did the best coaches in history taught me

  • John Wooden (Basketball)
  • Dean Smith (Basketball)
  • Bear Bryant (Football)
  • Red Auerbach (Basketball)
  • Scotty Bowman (Hockey)
  • Mike Krzyzewski (Basketball)
  • Phil Jackson (Basketball)
  • Dan Gable (Wrestling)
  • Vince Lombardi (Football)

Quieres llegar lejos y bien, vamos acompañados" - proverbio africano

    Todo depende de la perspectiva
    It's all matter of perspective

     insano y te prometo
     algo maravilloso saldra de ello"

  • John Wooden (College Basketball)
  • Dean Smith (College Basketball)
  • Bear Bryant (Professional Football)
  • Vince Lombardi (Professional Football)
  • Red Auerbach (Professional Basketball)
  • Scotty Bowman (Professional Hockey)
  • Mike Krzyzewski (College Basketball)
  • Phil Jackson (Professional Basketball)
  • Dan Gable (College Wrestling)

  • These are some of the best coaches in american sport history. As any good coach knows enough as to how to play the game. But most of all have the vision skill. To observe the opponent and their weaknesses, to observe the field and catch its defects; to observe ones players and know their pros and weaknesses.

The last one, Vince Lombardi - I talk a bit about him because I am a Football fan- was one of the most victorious coaches in the history of the game. He created the NFL.

But how funny it is that None of this awesome coaches scored a point on the field. EVER.

This is comparable to what we consultants do. We are not going to compete or race who is better me or you -my client- in your expertise. I do not need to know how to cook to know that you have a failing restaurant because of lousy service (please check my older post regarding a restaurant case) . Or any other industry for that matter. Examples are plenty in my other posts.

It is being a strategist to take advantage of what YOU have with what I have, having a broader perspective and a fresher sight.  As they say:

"Two heads think better than one, four eyes see better than two, and four hands do better than two"

Que me dice tu firma de ti? // What can I learn from your signature??

    (English version below)

    ---------------------------------------

In a document published by Maryland University profesor Nick Seybert he makes a quite interesting conclusion: He says that the signature size is a tell regarding if a person is rather narcissistic thus arrogant or not. Conclusion given by many graphologists before him. what makes me smile in appreciation is that now, whoever has read my blogposts since the beginning know what I think of arrogance, and now professor Seybert has made strong reference to the dangers to an organization with a clear symptomatology to prove my theory.

He also infers that people with large signatures has almost no patent registrations, concluding that they lack innovation spirit, and they also have a ton more labor disputes... Hmm, interesting.

I is important to clarify that the size is described by 3 variables: square footage or impression area, amount of letters and traces. For more traces and letters, more arrogance.

I wonder why, knowing a tiny bit of graphology myself, I did not see that my former assistant, micro-tiny but with hundreds of traces all on top of the other as per a navel-fur-ball looking would eventually betray me? Go wonder. That's how I learned.

Anyway: Arrogance Kills Businesses.  Of course professor Seybert does not state it like that, he only states that Rupert Murdoch has a gigantic signature... point taken.

I guess that as everything worth in life it's a matter of balance, of fair equilibrium.

PS: Whoever knows me well knows my signature is 3 traces drawing a single letter... I've asked professor Seybert his take on that, hope he answers, someday...

TV killed the radio star, or the internet or... Who? / ¿Que el internet mato a quien??

    (english version below)
     7 tendrían computadora, 93, NO

No sirve, nunca sirvió...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TV killed the radio star, or the internet or... Who?

The internet, Oh thing of wonder. It's reach and potential... True, but because of a few we are made to believe that is the snakeoil kill-all solve-all, reality is that it´s not as much as we are told, and with such too many voices at once it becomes noise, Doesn't it? We are 7,000,000,000 humans alive today, plus that one born now... another, ... and another...

What most people do not acknowledge is that Most humans do NOT have internet access. According tho the IWS for 2012, 34% of humanity has internet access. The biggest culprits are: NorthAmerica with 78% Oceania 67%, Europe 63%, Latinamerica 42%, Asia & Middle east 41% and Africa only 15% of its population has access. However, 44% of the cibernauts are asian with over a billion users, 500M in Europe and another bunch in America. Internet  has grown in 12 years by 544%, Africa 3600% in the same period.

Still a long long long way to go before all of humanity has access, and still we hear everywhere that "The internet is murdering paper" ... right, but up to a very relative point.  Lets review the facts:

Only 3% of all books published in human history have been digitized. Increasing  fast , but by some estimates humanity will still be at that for another 200 years... I'll give you a hard discount of 100 years.
Only in the US 25% of the book industry sales are eBooks. In Europe is 2%, and LatinAmerica must be around 1%. True that the editorial industry has lost, starting with their credibility, but still crumbs. Crumbs that amass 1 million titles in the US last year alone in indie format. They will not go without a fight, and still a long way, but they are indeed feeling footsteps on the roof. Nowadays its just amazing that we do not depend on an antiquated burocrat who chose from his extra-subjective criteria if something was going to sell or not, Now its up to the public who decides with their own taste and money.... Music industry, somewhere like that.

Newspapers, this one didn't even feel the footsteps. The internet does have them on their knees, that is, in some developed niches. In the US their sales have plummeted down to the 1950s numbers and still falling fast. True that still on their knees they may be fighting back, but fleeing investors just out of panic or in search of who knows what are their own worst enemies.True that some exporting their business model to the internet will survive, but I don't know if that will work, at least not to all of them, many are still going to fall. News must be of extreme high quality and not available for free anywhere may have a chance to survive in the membership model... Advertising sales depend on traffic so it will be extremely difficult to keep old business models just like so, so it is close to impossible. Arrogance will make that impossible. Some lower income niches and markets they may still have some hope. Completely die off? Nah, I don't think so. But their glory days have gone never to return. Every person with a digital camera and even with a lame verbal skill is a journalist now...

Magazines for what I can see at a distance they are stuck in the middle of books and newspapers. Their only hope is to go into a hybrid business model and with a very high quality content. Those saturated with 2 articles and 200 ads are undoubtedly dead, and unfortunately most are like that. We still have waiting rooms, Don't we?

Yellow Pages or whatever Phone directories... D E A D... In my past life as an industrial my boss paid well over 250K usd for ads in those books. In their height, Mexico City books were  2 at about 4 inches thick, each about 8 years ago. 5 years ago I was in charge of killing those ads. 4, 3 and 2 years ago they called and pleaded for our return with a halfass discount lure... Today, The book (no longer 2) its about 2 inches thick. Those guys abused and now they are paying the consequences. Disappear  maybe not, but boy do they deserve to.

In some countries, not all, Direct Mailing is an advertising method. DEAD. Experts speculate that a good DM campaign is when 0.5% is catched. How wasteful can you get? it is like throwing an annoying nuclear bomb into the ocean killing everyones attention to grab a couple of shrimp... Most unethical and antiecological... dead at 99%

Telemarketers: Please, oh please die!! I mean, the telemarketing industry... Poor zombies that they don't even dial the phone only to be hung up and cursed on not even half way into the first scripted phrase, screened by caller ID, recorders, etc... Doesn't work, never has, never will. Not related to paper, but still.

Television, will not die for it has adapted pretty Ok, but can do a better job at it. Some TV Stations Abuse severely on the amount of Ads they broadcast...  I know a case, a newscast in Mexico City that its live for 3 hours... without fear of exaggeration more than half of the broadcast are ads over news... And if we leave valuable content, I could cut it down to 4 minutes even with the well scripted editorials...

In my past life, I was immersed in the advertising specialty and promotional item industry for 8 years covering a good part of our continent. When your become aware of this industry it is just amazing the cacophony we all live in. Experts speculate we all receive between 3 to 4000 ads a day... I dare you dear readers to remember 5... All aspects of the advertising industry will have to remodel, innovate on itself if it wants to survive. My apologies marketeers: It is not only about the message it is about the content. So please stop YELLING and start listening...

Don´t get me wrong, I LOVE what the Internet IS, not the myths and buzz sme have made us believe!
Funny thing we humans are... Will it be like the theaters were going to be killed by the movies, the movies by the TV, radio by TV, trains by automobiles, highways by planes, ships by planes, LPs were going to be killed by the 8track... right, but by the CDs... Well, the LPs have come back from the dead in some musiclover circles and plenty of DJs... so dead, what you call dead, they 'aint. ... and all of this dead by the internet.... don't think so... So:

Stop whining and Adapt yourselves!!! because what is true, who doesn't adapt truly does die...

Close but not really for the passenger trains and the sail boats who should make some kind of comeback simply for ecological reasons...  Horses, as much as I love them, sorry, but maybe not..
