Most Happy Gregorian 2014! // Muy feliz 2014 Gregoriano!!

(English version below)

No?

AQUI ESTAMOS   //  HERE WE ARE

-----------------------

Let me start by wishing Y'all a brand new and very happy Gregorian 2014.
I've been through a handful of adventures and pondered through all that happened in 2013, which got me thinking a bit, even if its not "Reflection Sunday":

It's been a year since the ridiculous "end of the world" 121212. So I wonder, Why do a few apocalyptic minds think the world will end in a specific numeric day? Does the universe care for our human counting? Or is it rather a fear created by a religious something? And why is it that us in our American hemisphere forget that we are the last ones to cheer upon the each of the new Gregorian years?
Why is it that we celebrate new years 10 days after the solstice, when that is when most if not all ancient civilizations celebrated new years? I'd believe it'd be a tad bit more precise, Wouldn't it?

Why is it then, that we mark predetermined dates for certain future events? Many affirm that time does not exist... wonderful feeling, but Are we not ageing? If in fact galaxies and all of our known universe is ruled by life cycles and temporalities... Time is in fact relative to our perception of itself, that is way different to say that it odes not exist...

If we could perhaps ask a Cicada, What he thinks of dawn, he'd say it is when he spawn and dies. For them dawn is like Draculesque, they can't watch it without dieing, or so I've heard...
Or that Venus' day is 243 Eathling days long, or as a friend says, same as a Monday in corporate life. Or Jupiter's 9.9 hours long, that is the same as my last vacation... If I ask my son's Which is longer? schools morning or Saturday's? ... you get the point...

So if the Earth's universal convention is that our year is 365.25days, or rounded up a bit to 365 which is what our spaceship takes to go around our Star... which is undoubtful... good and immovable reference... Which the universe does not care at all.

Despite all of this. I do not know about you guys but every year I am one more that I make, declare and summon my own Gregorian new years' resolutions... most likely abandoning them the same as the rest of humanity before January is over...

However, everyday that goes by, truth is we feel nothing or pretty much nothing significant happens, but a handful of our days in our lives.. Unless we take perspective of our year, or worse, our whole life!! Still, there are a bunch of very important and significant events we forget or we don't even take notice... Especially unsavory or difficult events...
So Why is it the, that we obsess on Not taking notice of each of our babysteps as a real and significant step? Truth is that time goes mercilessly by, life goes by whether we want to see it or not. If in turn each of us take the reins of our own initiatives. goals and resolutions, which by the way mus't have to be December 31'st alone and thus forsaken before January is over. But rather on each morning and each dusk recount every accomplishment to remount on the next day. So we innovate and reborn each and everyday... simple.

Fantacious and idealist? Very likely. But believe me. It works.
It works and very well in both our lives and our businesses, because if we don't, we will loose track and it will die off before we even notice.

Have a very happy 2014.

What's the point of an expo if you don't expose yourself?

(English version below)

- si, evidentemente no te interesa siquiera vender...

Yo he curado algunas cegueras de negocios.

---------------------------------------------------

This week I have a few things to celebrate, but I will not go into philosophicities, Today is not Sunday, so nothing to worry about. My blog is a year old with over 13000 readers and 80 posts. It's been a challenge, since before that I'd never consider launching ideas into cyberspace and see what happens...

Today's story will be kind of short, I still have a ton of work to do on a couple of cultural innovation methodologies. Still, I do want to share this.

3 weeks ago I was invited to an expo, third in six months in fact. The theme is irrelevant since mostly the same thing happened at each and everyone. I was pretty excited but at the end I was also skeptical, so I went anyway. I scouted the whole expo, I stopped by most booths and I introduced myself as, as a matter of fact with different credentials each time. This was with a pinch of experimentation but mostly relevance.  Sometimes it was as my own practice, and most times as my clients interests/proposals.

For ten years I worked on the exposition floor, that is, I was stuck in the booth for 12 hours a day for several days straight. Always exhausting but with a ton of hopes and expectations. It is true that, You never know. -YOU NEVER KNOW- who will approach you and introducing themselves to you, and true that there are a few insincere or unclear persons, BUT it is also true that your work as a expositor is to expose yourself!! You must measure the risks involved true, but no risk, no gain. For ten years I met thousands of people and made business with a few hundreds, some of them millionaire transactions. And some of those were from very unexpected persons. After a few expos per year for 10 years I can honestly and with no margin of error confirm: YOU NEVER KNOW from whom your next big business will come from.

My point is, in these three recent expos I just said I had a project that I thought it might be interesting to them. Might that be for them to commercialize our proposal, us adding value to their proposal, or us commercializing their product. And this is why I cant believe such stupidity, since their job is ti sell. Not even this are they doing right. I barely received follow up "thank you for stopping by" email, most did not even respond my request. And just a handful that did respond, did not give me a price list. How am I supposed to buy their stuff if I don't know how much I should pay for!?!?

To a girl I met, I said: "I have a friend [client] that has a huge project of a few buildings that I do not know the specifics at this point, but we could look into furnishing them all with your very nice stuff, being this a very nice opportunity for us all! - her answer was: - "How many square feet? where? for whom? if you cant say, I'm not interested..." - clearly you do not want to sell squat.

" they may steal your idea but never your talent" - proverb

The key was I told nobody the deep end of the proposal. Sometimes because I still do not know the specifics, sometimes out of strategy, and most simply because of time since I will not keep them away their booth. Still the conceptual proposal was: I WANT TO BUY from you, I WANT TO ADD to your proposal for YOU to make some cash, or ... But mostly I never said How, which synergy method for all of us to earn some was I suggesting, Which machine or concept would be added, Nothing like that...

I do have to agree though some of my proposals are suigeneris, exorbitant, heterodox... Still, even the ones: "I want to buy", their responses were, pretty idiotic. Or was I speaking martian? Or are they at the expo just simulating that they are kinda working, kinda selling, kinda doing something.... They are protecting themselves of the Boogeyman of whoknowswhat kinda stupidity that they are not even complying their own jobs..!!

" Not out of fear of crows will I ever stop sowing" - proverb

I worked ten years in expos in the USA, land of the expos. Any decent proposal either  back of forth I evaluated and explored to its end without ever losing a chance of anything. And that is EXACTLY why I made some millionaire transactions. More than a few were outside the land of sell my stuff... Loosing chances before even looking at what the **** is the other chap talking about... Not even out of gentle manners, or curiosity to find out "why is he interested in me", I mean, not even out of egocentricity, so there is no other choice but shear stupidity... I must be clear that not everyone is that idiotic or lost, I have gone into interesting cases, BUT there are just so many, many more idiots in the world than not!!!

What's my suggestion, well, there is no cure for stupidity, but there is for blindness. I've cured a few business blindness.

Come in first, second... What to do? - ¿Primero o segundo?

----------------------------

One question regarding the recent frequently cited "first come disadvantage": Wouldn't that just become a paradox of nobody starting anything because everyone is waiting for everybody else to sart something just to grab and become a rather lazy, comfy second?

I do believe that it not matter of starting first, second or third, is more a matter of keeping up with the  pace, so it is rather a mindframing problem. Why did Google overcome Yahoo, and why did Yahoo did nothing against Google? Xerox, Microsoft and Sony vs Apple, KMart vs Walmart... and so many more cases were rather cases of being dismissed as non-threats, thus not taking, or losing the strategic first-come as an advantage, Yahoo lost that first served chance when they chose not to aquire Google when they had that small golden chance.

True, Game Theory teach us that sometimes is best to be second as in rock-paper-scissors, sometimes is best to be first as in car racing, the Olympics, or a gun duel, and sometimes doesn't really matter as in every complex games happens, as in chess, marathons or true life.

It is my experience as a strategist and innovator that Arrogant dismissals against the small upcomming underdog IS what happens each and everytime a second commer wins, rarely the other way around. And after that happens, the first-arrival-loser lose because of lost-mind, risk-averse disbelief rather than anything else.

There are enough big players that call themselves disruptors, like P&G.... Those guys never take on an innovation unless it has been proven in the field for at least a year by someone else, proving their risk-averseness. After a year, nowadays that is just old news.

And unlike Chess, life and humanity must go on.

Some one at some point will dethrone Apple and google and... everyone.

The reason why all of the 70% Of innovations fail.

(English version below)

Linda paradoja, no?

--------------------------------------------------

70% Of innovations fail. True. but Why? Hasn't anybody asked themselves, Why?

Though true that it is a statistic, by far and very far it is NOT a probabilistic number. In my 15 years of processes and innovation culture experience, my conclusion is that 70% of innovations fail for one reason: Idiotic and useless search for the absolute perfection.

All of us humans search, quest, perfection. Except maybe mediocres... of course, they do search the perfect justified, rationalized, lazy, no-risk middle... anyway... Point is:

Absolute perfection does not and will never exist. In innovation processes, a bit less.

FEAR of imperfection is and will always be what halts us: "What will the cute, beautiful girl (or guy) will siay if I talk to her(him)?? better say nothing..." we end up choking... It might have just happened that the cute girl (or guy) was waiting for us to come by and say Hi, but out of fear, nothing happened. I already had the NO, What had I to lose? maybe a bit of EGO... and that'd be it.

Same happens with commercial innovation: "What will people say? My audience? my stakeholders and investors??..." Of course it matters!! but a lot less than any inaction.

Every innovation specialist as myself, we say that a high perfection percentage  will be enough. How High is enough? Well, it is relative to a bunch of different factors and metrics of course, starting with the product, service and circumstances themselves. Mediocre? Never!

There are hundreds, thousands of product examples that go out to market and flunk on every year. Many of them are reborn even stronger. Many times in hands of others. I ask then, Why not in our own hands? Why would we voluntarily leave a golden opportunity pass onto someone else to grab the success?
Xerox's Star OS and mouse rekindle in Apple's IBM and Microsoft's hands
Sony's MP3 in Apple's hands
Microsoft's tablet in Apple's hands... Just to mention a few recent cases.

In my 15 years I have launched a bit under 100 products to market. Some quite successful, some not so much and some died trying. It'd be too arrogant of me to pretend saying that all of them were a commercial success. Nobody can say that. What Nobody says is that all of the ones that died trying were key steppingstones to the ones that became successful! Thus were a success of sorts.

In the "glass half empty... in truth it is full of at least air!" If you don't value air, I'd invite you to stop breathing now...

So at the end of the day, ALL were successful one way or another. The ones win low to no sales allowed us to find the ones that were hugely successful, which otherwise we'd never had found. If I listened to all the oppositioners, we would've never had any successful ones. Nice paradox. The skill lies in seeing, in visualizing, invisioning the potential though partial as it may be or through a path not even heard of.  At times it is even matter of letting things decide by themselves, to state it in some raw form. Of course we enter the 'control-freak's or mega-focused nightmare´s realm.'...

Viagra, resounding commercial failure for years. That is of course until a visionary commercializes it with a never before thought-of intent.

Perfect success measure, as most investors or bosses demands is mostly absurd. There is not enough people on the planet to let everybody's american rotten-zillionaire dreams to hand out to everybody. So, Is that enough reason to abandon all of the ideas? I do not think so, because partial, small successes, even the ones considered as failures in truth are stepping stones for some to truly reach rotten-zillionaire status.

Want something with zero risks? Might as well stop breathing because that is the only true no-risk option.

Finally, the reason why eventually, a giant majority of times people abandon, mostly even before they start... "because there is not enough focus, perfection or [whatever]..."

That is a bunch of rationalized mediocrity. Sorry.

complaints and other annoyances // quejas y otras molestias

(English version below)

"There are only two rules to write:
have something to say, and say it"- Oscar Wilde

¿Idealista? algo. ¿Realista? Totalmente.
-----------------------------------------------------

In this my 70th published post and 11,000nd readership, I share one more of Sunday's Reflections:

Why, as humans, on the one side we complain nobody does nothing, and on the other we don't do it ourselves?
Though true that innovation does not grow on trees nor it will flourish out of a void, according to the biggest experts in history maybe too many rules have been established, out of which I do consider these the 3 main pillars:

"Everything is connected to everything, we just need the skills to find such connections"- Leonardo DaVinci
"More important than intelligence is imagination" _ Albert Einstein
"Creativity is intelligence having fun" - Albert Einstein

Then, Why do we stubbornly demand things from our on self voids, push our brains to fill it with knowledge and at the same time we limit fun and imagination to the minimum?
And on the other end of things, we copy everything, we don't take risks, to explore, we want everything "peeled, mashed and in the mouth"...

Why don't we stop copying, mind our own, do what we have to to better our world and at the same time, make some money. IS that so hard?? I do not think so.

Idealist? somewhat. Realist? Totally.

skepticism and other disclaimers // escepticismos y otras fes de erratas.

(english version below)

----------------------------

It is said that 70% of all innovation attempts fail. It so happens that, contrary to popular belief, and on top of all skeptics, this datum is based on result statistics, not on success probability. That is, anyone that takes any innovation initiative will not mean that he´ll only hit 1 out of each four attempts will succeed. Failure reasons are as infinite as the amount of variables, including human, nature and yes, luck factors. But, and it is a big However, knowing what you are doing, pretty much all can be sorted out.

Skepticism, contrary to what skeptics assume and presume, are listened by dreamers. Most skeptics are, with time, proved wrong as we dreamers are to their nightmarish burden, much much more stubborn than they are arrogant.

Lets play an example: since ancient Greek tales with the legend of Icarus, one if not the first historic record of a human taking flight by our own wit and not by a vertical accident. Same pagan example was used by the church, the standard of the largest group of skeptics in history, for the following 2000 years to describe that impossibility and "attempt against Gods will"...

during those same 2000 or some years we have enough dreamers and wonderful and successful attempts as the legendary Chinese and Davinci´s paragliders, and maybe we can include the hot air balloons. Still decades after the Wright Brothers humanity had enough skeptics who still babbled around with absolute and inept unapologetic certainty, whilst boarding tremendous and absurd tin cans and going cross-continent air trips. They still said for years: "such machines have no practical, much less economical use..." right...

Lets continue on with the starting premise if I may, assuming that we took the success statistic of every aviation attempt up to 1910, we´d end up with a success rate below 1%... not 70%. Today it must be closer to 99%,  all thanks to knowledge and science. I can´t say 100% thanks to those idiots that we can still watch on some TV shows, but instead of seeing them in science shows we see them on "the most idiotic videos on the planet" kind of shows, so thanks for dropping our science statistics down a notch you guys...!

"Everything is impossible right up to the point when someone does it" - proverb

Examples i can cite billions. I could probably cite a ludicrous blockage attempt versus each and every prosperous invention we humans have. Aviation is one of the most resisted one in human history and now it is impossible to think a world without airplanes. That is, absolutely every inventor, creative, visionary and dreamer has encountered great resistance, always. And it is after all this same resistance the one that moves us, so thank you for existing.

For some strange reason (not that strange but I will not get stuck on the texture) around the 1850s through the 1930s, humanity saw the largest amount of inventions come into fruition percapita in human history. It seems for a moment that most humans saw not only the need, but the vitality for economical and mental survival. What has happened to us since?

In my personal experience I've had hundreds of barriers in some way or another... The fact that we become used to, and strive against the wall out of will does not mean we do not feel frustration from time to time... This time, it just so happens that together with a friend and client we developed an invention (more him than me but beyond the point) that could potentially eradicate crime on our cities streets within a reasonable unit price. I do have another friend who in turn presented our new system to the county's sheriff who answered: "For what? I do have enough policemen..." - em - "really... our country is one of the worst ranked in world's violence, dear mister sheriff..."  I said... don't think the dear sir heard me... neither has he aparently heard about Einstein's definition of the idiot:

"Idiot is that who repeats actions and still expects different results" - A. Einstein

Part of my job and talent as a strategist is to find the way, find the Where's the yes, everywhere.

ROWE vs Free Range chickens? // gallinas sueltas o por resultados?

(English version below)

Estimados lectores,

---------------------------------

Dear readers,

Most of my industrial experience was in ROWEs, by logic these is the most abundant environment, and I'll get to criticize in a minute, but the key aspect is that short term vision makes you focus on the urgent and not on the important, which in turn ends up creating a curved tunnel vision, that is at the end of the day, you end up strangling the log term vision.

I also worked in a small factory that, well, I learned everything you must do to screw things up as a boss and as a company. Among other things, we had no hierarchy, no one was a boss of no one and despite we did have clear tasks, we were 60 people each pulling each owns chariot. But I did learn something good, that you can as a boss demand not over results but on attitude.

" Not too much fire to burn the monk, not to little to not shine on him either" - Spanish Proverb

I learned that people end up reacting very badly on both extremes. In ROWE people burn out their own fuses. In one occasion a coworker dropped dead by a heart attack in his office. I ended three times when younger with severe nervous attacks, one of those with severe chest pains I wish on no one. To both of us we were demanded just too much over our human capacity and ended affecting our health, "our saint was burned down".

There are plenty of studies made by very reputable institutions which connect work environment stress to heart, obesity, diabetes, etc problems. Which in turn not only affects the human capacity but the quality of the work output execution. In my personal case, when I started with my afflictions, I was working myself off 18 hours a day for a long period of time, just to please my bosses. Evidently my own work efficiency came tumbling down, nerves got hold and the best of me and I exploded like a toad on three occasions.

In the free range chicken environment, on the contrary, the stress came out of despite knowing our tasks we had no clear structure to execute, no rulebook or clear and simple procedures to follow, so the machines we produced came out miraculously. I proposed 30 innovation in procedure work rules in my first couple of months on the job, but the owner was preoccupied by his golfing techniques and opening the downtown corporate offices... 6 months after I left, the company shut down their doors for good. Product innovation was their only salvation for 40 years of existence, despite not having any work rules.

When it was my turn to be boss to over 200 people I was very demanding, but never ruthless. If we had to deliver an order to a client, from time to time with the union reps on board we had 24 to 36 hour shifts, but then we rested for 48. The small sacrifice to have a big customer account really happy.

People, please treat people like people to be treated like people. Not quasirobots trying to hatch robots being ...um, people.
Funny how managers that accuse lazy employees is because they are usually too lazy to supervise  and motivate correctly... keyword> correctly. I never drove someone to a nervous breakdown unless they deserved that out of personal negligence and for the greater good. The key is to know each individual real good to know if its negligence or capacity. This was one innovation I brought and implemented in HR. For 8 years as a boss it worked wonders, and with this I was able to launch 50 new products to market, that is, I created our own Innovation Culture.

To exploit people in order to satisfy the ROWE objectives has its advantages, of course, but as everything, it has a cost. For the greater pressure on people the bigger it will be the cost on the long term.

We must be able to innovate the processes, procedures and human resources in order to insure the company's long term survival. The ROWE System usually condemns much less facilitates the Innovation Culture which is vital for the company's survival. Google is the master in balancing both simultaneously. I did it, at my own scale of course, but before I knew Google even existed.

infectar, mutar, o morir // infect, mutate or die.

(english version below)

Dear readers, after a brief family crisis and a heavy project overload, I'm back form my brief absence.

I wanted to type a bit about eco-innovation ad a small reflection... This is clearly a overexploited subject in most contexts and media... I do get tired too, because truth is we get an overbearing, gut wrenching guilt and impotence feelings, sometimes over to absurd levels, that is, to the ones that care about the health of out children and other descendants. Another truth is that daily routine and human ecosystem is built in such a way that we forget there is a world within our tiny planet, but out there beyond the city walls which in truth is very sick. Dr. M.L.King and Einstein used to say in a very similar way: "Hell is filled with people who noticed something was wrong and did nothing to remedy it."

Also true is that most environmentalist information is loaded with sensationalism and evidently it is made that way to create a conscience , but some do over do it. Even come to the absurd to print paper with: "save some trees, don´t use paper.."

A true pillar is that all human activity causes effects, and by the way society is built, most are inescapable. Lets say we got to a mountain somewhere as a hermit, - that is if we can find a ´virgin´ patch of land owned by no one, or we could afford it ourselves, so good luck with that - anyway, it just so happens that anything we do will harm in some way that tiny environment. We come into the "existence and observation paradox." According to the quantum physics observation law, the observed particle will change its behavior just for the reason of being watched. Extrapolating that to the human existence, the habitat will change its behavior and evidently the other way around too.

Now, in this last example, we find a patch of Forrest  jungle, whatever you please with a cave, water stream, etc... We limit our fire use, we eat whatever its there, etc. What would make this micro-environment sustainable? By principle our existence will be noticed, but the damage should be the least permanent possible. That is "the environment will change its behavior" will kick in it will compensate our breaths CO2 by the foliage, the seed in our food will bloom again, the broken branches for our fire will sprout, the ashes are fertilizing, etc. So the microecosystem will promptly autoregenerate.

The problem is we are 7,000,000,000 humans on Earth, consuming resources as if there was no tomorrow. According to some statistics we have around 50 years or so natural resources worth for not only human, but planetary subsistence. I do not know that, so I will not judge.

Humans have been around for roughly 20,000years. versus 13.5trillion whatever years of life existence on the planet, and considering 99% was extinct well beyond 20,000years before, well ,that was not human´s fault, but too many is.

The sun has, I believe 1,2, 5, 12, 80, 150, 500, 1000 y 5000 year cycles. Evidently all scientific records go back 150 years only. PRevious to that is basically paleontology or whatever kind of studies. It just so happens that about 500 years ago was the hottest few years of human history. Of course that GHGs and global warming is a fact, and I guess that if 500 years ago the planet had the same GHG levels as we do today, most land animals would be extinct by drowning today was we know them. I do not know back when, Jurassic or whatever, GHG levels were a lot higher than today, but that was clearly before the Ice Ages. That would have been some toasty dinosaur or whomever summers.

Also true that this are by no way of reason to continue doing stupid damage as we all do everyday.

We as humans cannot turn back the clock, but starting at where we are at, we have plenty to do in our own tiny little corner of our world, every day.

In a pretty lousy movie I saw many years ago, the only respectable part of the movie was its opening phrase, and it was the definition of virus: "biological entity who invades the hosts body, and with total disregard if the host dies, it consumes every available resource the host has unlit either the host dies or mutates. And the virus has 3 options: mutates, dies or changes hosts".

Our host is our planet. No way of escaping that. And true, our Earth has its own mutating mechanisms: Ice Ages, jelly fish overpopulation, superhuracanes, etc. But apparently humans are quicker in doing stupidities.

Assuming we do not have another host to go to as technology is still too far away to do so, we have the other 2 options: either we mutate or die.

What we can do is we can mutate our conscience, innovate within for the greater good. OH, and by the way, lets do business, which is apparently what my treehugger friends tend to forget and capitalists tend to dismiss. That is both save the planet and do business is not only possible but a must.

Um, that is why I skipped way too many days to blog out.
